Softball Splits Twinbill With Saint Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. – Rachel Teti (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) walked with the bases loaded in the fourth to break a 3-all tie and lift Mount St. Mary's past Saint Francis (Pa.) 5-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) softball action on Saturday. The Red Flash (16-20, 5-7 NEC) won the nightcap, 11-2.

Teti entered the game as a pinch hitter and induced a bases loaded walk to break a 3-all standstill in the fourth inning. Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo homer. Tuck finished the game with two hits and two runs scored and an RBI.

Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Mount (11-26, 4-6 NEC) and Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had two hits and two RBIs in the first game while Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land)  registered three hits and an RBI on the afternoon.

Paige Smith paced Saint Francis (Pa.) with five hits, five runs scored and four RBIs in the two games while Davina Kachnovitz added two hits and three RBIs.

In the opener, Mount St. Mary's rallied for a 5-3 victory.

After the Red Flash tied the game at 3 with a run in the third, the Mount struck back for a run in the fourth to take the lead for good.

With two outs, Christiansen and Clifford reached on back-to-back singles before Kelly Hickman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) walked to load the bases on four pitches and pinch hitter Teti reached on a five-pitch walk to play the go-ahead run. Tuck then homered on a full count to lead off the seventh to seal the 5-3 win.

The Mountaineers got the scoring started with a run in the first. Beebe walked, Katy Bobbitt (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) reached on an error and Christiansen loaded the bases when she was hit by the pitch. Clifford brought home Beebe on a groundout for a 1-0 lead. Hickman reloaded the bases on a walk with one out, but a pop out and a ground out ended the threat.

Saint Francis took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Taylor Parsons' two-run homer.

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the second to take a 3-2 edge. Tuck opened the rally with an infield single before Beebe singled up the middle. Tuck touched home on Bobbitt's bunt and Clifford doubled to left center to plate Beebe.

Kachnovitz tied the game at 3 in the third on an RBI single to the pitcher, but the Mount posted a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh to earn the victory.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) picked up her eighth win of the season after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Saint Francis (Pa.) used a seven-run third to earn an 11-2 five inning win and split the doubleheader.

The Red Flash scored a run in the first to tie the game and then posted seven runs in the third to grab an 8-1 lead. Saint Francis (Pa.) added three runs in the fourth to help end the contest in five innings.

Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J./Buena Regional) walked in the first and came around to score on Christiansen's RBI single to give Mount St. Mary's a 1-0 edge.

After the Red Flash scored 11 times in the next four innings, the Mount added a run in the fifth. Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) was hit by a pitch, Santiago singled to second base and Christiansen was hit with a pitch to load the bases with one out. After a lineout, Hickman walked to bring home Mizianty with the second run.

Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) pitched 2.2 innings and took the loss while Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tossed the final 1.1 innings.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at Our Lady of the Meadows Field against Robert Morris. First pitch is 2 p.m.
