Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 30, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's was edged by Wagner in both games of a Friday afternoon doubleheader at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.  The Mount lost the opener, 9-6, in 10 innings before seeing a late rally fall short in an 8-7 loss in the nightcap.

In the second game, the Mount rallied from an 8-0 third-inning deficit, but came up short in the 8-7 loss.

Wagner (11-15, 7-3 NEC) scored four runs in the top of the first and third innings to take the early eight-run lead.  Jayson Keel had a two-run double in the first while Bill Murphy had a two-run single in the third for the Seahawks.

The Mount (7-21, 0-10 NEC) started the rally with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Michael Foster and Nick Walker singled to open the frame and Mark Quaranta followed with a two-run double to right-center field to cut the deficit to 8-2.  After moving to third on a groundout, Quaranta scored on Sam Nott's grounder to short.

Mount St. Mary's scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run ballgame.  Nott and Andrew Clow each singled to open the inning, and Ryan Owens followed with a base hit up the middle to score Nott to cut the Wagner lead to 8-4.  Pinch-hitter Mo Moriarty then laced a one-out double to left to plate Clow and put runners on second and third.  Foster's groundout to third plated Owens to cut the Wagner lead to 8-6.  Nick Walker then lined a single to left to score pinch runner Austin Carter.  Walker, however, was thrown out at second base to end the inning.

Josh Winter doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the Mount to put the tying run on second base, but Wagner closer Anthony Battaglia was able to get a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.

Quaranta went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Walker and Clow also added two hits each in the loss.  Starter Scott Nickerson allowed eight runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss.  Chris Campbell and Nick Rliey combined for 4.2 innnings of scoreless relief.

In the opening game, Wagner took advantage of four Mount errors to score five unearned runs in the victory.  The Seahawks scored three times in the first before Quaranta hit a solo homer to right to make the score 3-1 after one inning of play.

Wagner added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Mount's Jay Knight hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2.

Mo Moriarty added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and the Mount scored two times in the fifth to even the score.  Foster and Winter each had RBI singles in the inning.

Wagner scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but the Mount tied the score  in the bottom half of the inning when Walker and Quaranta singled to put runners on first and third, and Winter came through with a sacrifice fly.

Mount St. Mary's had the winning run on third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Battaglia got a strikeout to end the threat.

Wagner scored three times in the 10th to seal the win on a bases loaded walk and a two-run bloop single to right field.

Foster, Quaranta and Knight each had two hits in the loss for the Mount.  Starting pitcher Karl Lamont allowed six runs (one earned) in eight innings in a no decision.

The teams conclude the four-game series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
