Seventh Inning Dooms Softball At UMBC Softball Classic

BALTIMORE, Md. – Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games in the seventh inning to conclude the UMBC Spring Classic in non-conference softball action on Sunday. Brown defeated the Mount 5-4 and Georgetown downed the Mountaineers 2-1.

Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced the Mount (6-17) with four hits, including a solo home run against the Bears. Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored while Holly Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) posted two hits and a run scored on the afternoon.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 4-2 lead against Brown before a walk-off three-run homer gave the Bears the win in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Mount jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning. Buckel reached on an error and touched home on Liz Christiansen's (Etters, Pa./Red Land) sacrifice fly to left field. Katy Bobbitt (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) walked and came around to score on Cat Clifford's (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) RBI single up the middle.

In the third, Tuck reached on a bunt single and touched home on Chloe Mizianty's (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) run-scoring bunt single to give the Mountaineers a 3-0 edge.

Brown got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the fourth, but Leddy responded right back in the top of the fifth with her second homer of the weekend to maintain the three-run difference. The Bears added a run in the bottom of the fifth and then earned the victory thanks to a three-run homer in the seventh.

Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) took the loss in the opener after allowing five runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

In the nightcap, Georgetown hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to edge the Mount 2-1.

The Hoyas took the early 1-0 edge after registering a run in the fourth.

Mount St. Mary's answered with a run in the fifth. Christiansen singled to left field to lead off the frame. Pinch runner Lindsey Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) moved to third when Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Ruhle then scored on Tuck's bunt single with one out. Georgetown then registered a lineout and a fly out to get out of the jam and keep the game tied at 1. The Hoyas then won the game with a solo shot in the seventh.

After the Hoyas grabbed the lead Christiansen walked to start the seventh, but was erased on a double play and a ground out ended the game.

Coming off a five-inning perfect game against Rhode Island on Friday, Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action and makes its 2012 Our Lady of the Meadows debut in the Northeast Conference opener against Quinnipiac on Saturday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
