Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington swept a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday. The Colonials (6-12) won 3-0 in the opener and earned a 5-4 victory in nine innings in the nightcap.
Holly Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) posted two hits in the second game for the Mount (5-14) while Rachel Teti (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) had a two-run double in the nightcap.
Kara Clauss won both games on the day after tossing a no-hitter in the opener and then pitched the final 3.2 innings of the nightcap.
In the nightcap, the Mountaineers rallied to tie the game, but George Washington edged the Mount in nine innings, 5-4.
Using the international tiebreaker rule, Alex Thompson was placed on second in the ninth, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch for the decisive run.
The Colonials grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the third when Autumn Taylor plated Lauren Wilson on an infield single.
Mount St. Mary's tied the game in the fifth. Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) singled to the shortstop, stole second and moved to third on Buckel's single to center before Mizianty touched home on a steal.
The Colonials answered right back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead again on Chelsea Lenhart's two-run double for a 3-1 edge.
The Mountaineers then tied the game in the top of the sixth. Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) singled to second base to start the rally. Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) singled to left before Teti plated both runs with a double to left center to knot the game at 3.
In the eighth, Clifford was placed on second and then advanced to third on a passed ball and touched home on a pass ball to give Mount St. Mary's a 4-3 lead.
Taylor was placed on second in the bottom of the frame. After a pair of pop outs, Taylor moved to third on a passed ball. Julie Orlandi then singled to right center to plate Taylor on a 2-1 pitch to tie the game and George Washington won the game in the ninth inning.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in the first seven innings. Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) allowed two unearned runs on one hit and took the loss.
The Colonials won the opener 3-0 thanks to scoring three times in the sixth. Wilson led off the inning with a solo homer and Victoria Valos doubled home two runs to cap the three run inning.
Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) was the only Mount hitter to reach in the opener when she reached on an error to lead off the third.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at the UMBC Spring Classic on Friday. The Mount will battle Brown at 6:20 p.m. to open the three-day event.
