Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. – Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) smacked a solo homer in the third inning to become the Mount St. Mary's all-time career leader in home runs and jump start the Mount St. Mary's offense to a 6-2 win against Niagara at the Dawg Pound Invitational in non-conference softball action on Sunday. The Mount (5-12) then lost 4-3 to Coppin State in the nightcap.
After smacking three homers on Saturday to tie former teammate Beth Everist (18, 2008-11) and Danyale Goode (18, 2003-06) for the all-time home run record, Christiansen established a new mark in her second at-bat with a solo shot to right center to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. The redshirt junior went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game and went 6-for-15 with four home runs, nine RBIs and a slugging percentage of 1.200 in the four games in the Dawg Pound Invitational.
Freshman Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts to earn her first collegiate win. Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) added her first career home run with a three-run shot in the fourth. Holly Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) posted two hits, two runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.
In the opener against Niagara, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring twice in the second and four times in the fourth on its way to a 6-2 victory.
Buckel started the rally in the second with a triple down the left field line and touched home on Chloe Mizianty's (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) sacrifice fly. Christiansen then belted her fourth home run of the weekend to establish a new career home run mark at the Mount and give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) was hit by a pitch, Leddy reached on a fielder's choice and Buckel loaded the bases with a single up the middle. After a force out at the plate, Christiansen increased the lead to three runs on an RBI ground out before Clifford drilled her first career homer to left field to give Mount St. Mary's a 6-0 lead.
The Purple Eagles posted an unearned run in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but the Mount came away with a 6-2 win.
Coppin State scored a pair of runs in the fourth and the fifth to rally for a 4-3 win against the Mountaineers in the nightcap.
Mount St. Mary's used the momentum from the first game to start its contest against Coppin State, scoring three times in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Rachel Teti (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) started the three-run rally by reaching base when she was hit with a pitch and came around to score on Leddy's RBI single to left. After Katy Bobbitt (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) singled to put runners at the corners, Bobbitt and Leddy successfully completed a double steal to bring Leddy home. Buckel then plated the third run on a single to left field for a 3-0 edge, but the Eagles used a pair of two-run innings to come-from-behind for the victory.
The Mountaineers got a runner to second in the seventh with two outs, but could not push the tying run cross. Teti walked and pinch runner Lindsey Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) moved to second on Leddy's sacrifice bunt, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Hayley Stankan (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts. Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at George Washington. First pitch is 3 p.m.
