Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) notched her second shutout of the season and struck out 14 to lead Mount St. Mary's past St. Bonaventure 7-0 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday. The Bonnies (6-5) won the nightcap, 4-3.
Pagano, the current NEC Pitcher of the Week, tossed a four-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts in the first game of the day. The sophomore recorded 14 strikeouts to become the first Mount pitcher with 14 punchouts since Jamie Fowler had 14 strikeouts against Morgan State on Apr. 3, 2008.
Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) posted two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored while Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had two hits and three RBIs for the Mount (2-4) in the win. Mizianty posted a hit and a run scored, and Clifford had a hit and an RBI in the nightcap. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) tallied three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in the two games.
Mount St. Mary's recorded a three-run third and a four-run sixth while Pagano held St. Bonaventure at bay to help the Mount to its second win of the season in the opener.
Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) started the rally in the third when she reached by being hit by the pitch and came around to score on Mizianty's single up the middle. The Mount then loaded the bases after Beebe reached on a fielder's choice and Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) was hit with a pitch. Clifford plated Mizianty and Beebe with a single through the left side for a 3-0 lead.
The Mountaineers added four runs in the sixth. Alyssa Silipino (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and Bre Lohman (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) singled to start the sixth and a pair of pinch runners touched home on Mizianty's two-run single up the middle. Mizianty scored on Beebe's RBI single up the middle and Beebe touched home on Clifford's base hit to center for a 7-0 advantage.
In the nightcap, Mount St. Mary's scored the first two runs before St. Bonaventure posted the next four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Bonnies used a pair of RBI singles in the first, an RBI single in the third and an RBI single in the fifth to grab a two-run margin.
The Mount responded with a run in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Mizianty was the catalyst for the inning with a single down the left field line to lead off the frame. After Beebe moved Mizianty up a base on a bunt, Christiansen plated Mizianty on a single up the middle with one out to trim the deficit to 4-3. A fly out and a strikeout ended the threat and the game.
The Mount used its momentum from the first game to start the second contest by scoring two runs. After Beebe and Christiansen started the rally with singles, Clifford followed with an RBI double and Lohman plated Christiansen for a 2-0 lead. The Bonnies then scored the next four runs to earn the doubleheader split.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched the first three innings with two strikeouts to take the loss while Danni Cummings (Calvert County, Md./Northern) tossed the final three innings with one strikeout in the nightcap.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at Stetson on Thursday for a doubleheader. Game time is 4 p.m.
