Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) nailed consecutive 3-pointers in the second half to lift Mount St. Mary's past Bryant 71-63 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
After the Bulldogs (13-15, 6-11 NEC) grabbed a 59-58 advantage, Guerriero drained a 3-pointer with 5:29 left and then nailed another one from behind the arc at 3:31 to give the Mount (14-14, 10-7 NEC) a 64-59 lead to help the Mount win its sixth-straight contest. The sophomore, who posted 13 points in last year's game at the Chace Athletic Center, finished the game with a career-high 14 points.
Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced the Mountaineers with 17 points, including going 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the final minute of play. Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) added 14 points while Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) tallied 12 points, eight assists and four steals in the winning effort.
Naana Ankoma-Mensa fueled Bryant with 14 points while Meredith Soper posted 12 points and Danielle Douglas chipped in 11 points in the loss.
It was a seesaw battle until Guerriero nailed consecutive treys to give Mount St. Mary's the lead and the Mount held on for the win to notch its first winning season in league play since 2005-06.
Kaitllyn Hinck gave the Bulldogs its final lead at 59-58 with 6:30 remaining. The Mount then closed the game by scoring 13 of the final 17 points to come away with the victory.
Guerriero gave the Mountaineers the lead for good on a 3-ball at 5:29 before the sophomore drained a trey at 3:31 to increase the advantage to 64-59.
Bryant then scored consecutive baskets to trim the margin to 64-63 thanks to buckets by Steph Cardamone and Soper.
Henderson answered by scoring in the lane with 81 seconds left to restore a three-point advantage. The two teams then traded turnovers before Kaufman hauled in a defensive rebound with 55 seconds left. Henderson then went 3 of 4 at the charity stripe and Tara Lonergan (Rockville, Centre, N.Y./South Side) sealed the win with two at the line.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first five minutes of the game before Bryant rolled off seven-straight points for an 18-11 lead with 13:10 left in the half. Mount St. Mary's responded with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game at 18 with 11:51 on the clock thanks to two free throws by Lonergan, a trey by Guerriero and a layup by Henderson.
The Bulldogs then went on a 16-9 run to grab a 34-27 advantage. Ankoma-Mensa fueled the run with six points. The Mount then closed the half on a 12-3 run over the final four minutes and 11 seconds to take the lead at the break.
Mount St. Mary's closed the first half on a 12-3 run to take a 39-37 lead going into the locker room.
Trailing 34-27, the Mount scored 12 unanswered points to take its first lead of the afternoon at 39-37. Guerriero started the run with a jumper at 4:11 and then nailed a trey at 2:48 to make the deficit two points. Mann tied the game at 34 on two free throws at 2:09 before Kaufman nailed a 3-pointer at 1:59 to give the Mountaineers a 37-34 lead. Mann then converted a 1-and-1 for a five-point edge, but Courtney Schissler nailed a trey at the one-minute mark to trim the Mount lead to 39-37 at the break.
The Mount increased its lead to 51-45 with 16:07 remaining in the second half after a Henderson 3-pointer.
Bryant answered with a 12-1 run to grab a 57-52 edge with 7:36 remaining. Douglas powered the run with four points. Mann and Kaufman then nailed consecutive baskets from behind the arc to hand the Mountaineers a 58-57 lead. Hinck regained the lead for the Bulldogs with a jumper at 6:30 before Guerriero and Henderson took over to lead Mount St. Mary's to the win.
The Mountaineers have won six-straight games for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
Mount St. Mary's concludes the regular season at Central Connecticut State on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.
