Daniel Stranix Records Hat Trick as Mount St. Mary's Tops No. 16 Delaware, 12-10

Box Score

Newark, Del. (February 25, 2012)—Daniel Stranix scored three goals to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 12-10 win over No. 16 Delaware in the season opener on Saturday afternoon.  It is the Mount's first win over the Blue Hens in 11 all-time meetings.

After Delaware scored back-to-back goals to even the score at 9-9 with 6:54 remaining, the Mount (1-0) rattled off three unanswered goals to pull away with the win.

Andrew Scalley opened the streak with an unassisted goal with 5:19 left to snap the tie.  Brett Schmidt extended the lead to 11-9 when he scored an extra-man goal with 2:13 remaining.  The Mount won the face-off, and after a timeout, Stranix beat the double team and scored his third goal of the game into the empty net as Delaware was pressing for a turnover.

Sophomore Chris Klaiber was outstanding in the cage for the Mount, making 13 saves, including four in the fourth quarter, in his first collegiate start.

The Mount had a balanced offensive attack with eight different goal scorers in the game.  Stranix led the way with three goals while Scalley and Brett Schmidt each scored a pair.  Bryant Schmidt, Anthony Golden, Mike Adkins, Jake Willertz and Braedon Graham also found the back of the cage for the Mount in the victory.

Jon Marsalese won 11-of-26 face-offs for the Mountaineers while scooping up a team-high eight ground balls.  Shane Pierce led the defense with three caused turnovers.

Grant Kaleikau led Delaware with two goals and two assists with Brian Kormondy chipping in a pair of goals and an assist in the game.

Delaware (2-3) held a 42-to-29 advantage in shots in the game and a 33-to-28 edge in ground balls.

The win was the Mount's third all-time against a ranked opponent, the first since a 14-12 win over No. 10 Lafayette in 2010.  The Mount is now 3-43 all-time against teams in the top 20.

Scalley extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 33 games.  His streak is the sixth-longest active streak in the country and Scalley has tallied 72 goals and 31 assists in the 33 games.

Delaware opened the game strong, taking a 3-1 lead with just under four minutes left in the first quarter.  The Mount answered with an extra-man goal by Willertz and a score from Bryant Schmidt to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the second quarter.

Graham's first collegiate goal opened the scoring in the second quarter while Stranix tied the game at 5-5 with just over a minute left in the half.

The Mountaineers held a 7-6 lead after three quarters of play.  After the Blue Hens evened the game at 7-7, Stranix and Golden scored goals one minute apart for a 9-7 lead midway through the fourth, setting up the final minutes of the game.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, February 28, when No. 1 Virginia visits Waldron Family Stadium on campus for a 4:00 p.m. game.
