Pagano Shuts Down Stetson To Help Softball Open The Season 1-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DELAND, FLA. – Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Mount St. Mary's past Stetson 1-0 in the second game of the Hatter Classic in non-conference softball action on Friday. The Mount (1-1) opened the season with a 9-0 loss to St. Bonaventure.

Pagano went the distance, posting a one-hit shutout with five strikeouts to hand the Hatters (6-1) its first loss of the season.

Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) knocked in the decisive run against Stetson while Alyssa Silipino (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) went 3-for-3 in the contest.

Mount St. Mary's scored a run in the third inning and Pagano held Stetson off the scoreboard to help the Mount open the season 1-1.

Silipino started the third inning with a single to right field. Lindsey Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) pinch ran for Silipino, moved to second on Holly Buckel's (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) sacrifice bunt and went to third on Taylor Beebe's (Olympia, Wash./Capital) infield single. Mizianty then plated Ruhle for the game's only run on a single up the middle.

The Hatters got runners on in three innings against Pagano, but could not get a run across. After getting a runner to second in the first and fourth innings, Stetson's best scoring chance came in the sixth.  The Hatters put a runner on third with one out and had runners on second and third with two outs, but a pop out ended the threat and then Stetson went down in order in the seventh.

The Mountaineers opened the season with a 9-0 loss to St. Bonaventure in five innings. The Bonnies (2-3) posted two runs in the second, a run in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to end the game after five innings.

Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Bre Lohman (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro)  each had a hit for Mount St. Mary's in the loss. Clifford also had a hit in the win against Stetson. Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched the season opener and took the loss.

Mount St. Mary's loaded the bases in the fourth with one out after Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) walked, a Clifford single to center and an Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) walk, but a fielder's choice and a ground out ended the threat.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday with two games at the Hatter Classic. The Mount will face Bethune-Cookman at 1:30 p.m. and Stetson at 6:30 p.m.
