Guerriero Sparks Late Rally To Lift Women's Basketball Past Wagner, 68-60

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) scored seven points off the bench in the second half to spark Mount St. Mary's to a 68-60 victory against Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Guerriero entered the game with 4:17 left with the Mount (11-14, 7-7 NEC) trailing 56-54. The sophomore nailed a 3-pointer 14 seconds later to give the Mountaineers the lead for good and then drained her second trey of the night with 3:18 left to increase the advantage to four points. Guerriero added a free throw to finish the game with seven points and one rebound.

Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) paced Mount St. Mary's with a season-high 18 points and five steals. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) added a season-best 14 points along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.

Kelly Clark led all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Marie-Laurence Archambault added 12 points for the Seahawks (2-22, 1-12 NEC) and Jacqui Thompson registered 10 points in the loss.

In a closely contested tilt, the Mount took the lead for good late in the second half and never looked back to complete the sweep in the NEC's Rivalry Week against Wagner.

Clark gave the Seahawks a 56-54 lead after making 1 of 2 at the free throw line with 5:05 left before Guerriero drained a 3-ball at 4:03 to hand the Mountaineers a 57-56 lead. The sophomore then increased the edge to four points on a trey at 3:18.

Clark answered with a layup at 2:42 to make it a two-point game, but Christie answered with a triple with 88 seconds left to restore a five-point edge. Thompson responded with a layup at 1:14 to trim the margin to 63-60, but Mann and Guerriero combined to go 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

The Mount jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the first 9:29 of the game thanks to four points apiece from Mann and Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). The Seahawks closed the first half by scoring 18 of the final 26 points to take a 26-21 edge going into the locker room. Thompson paced Wagner with eight points in the run.

Sparked by six points from Mann, Mount St. Mary's opened the second half on an 11-6 run to tie the game at 32 with 16:25 left. The Seahawks retook a five-point edge after scoring seven-straight points for a 43-38 margin with 12:47 remaining.

The Mount then used a 7-2 spurt to tie the game at 45 with 10:41 on the clock. The Seahawks grabbed a 51-47 lead with 8:39 left only to see the Mountaineers respond with a 6-0 run to grab a 53-51 edge with 6:21 left after a Christie 3-pointer. Wagner would take a two-point lead twice before Guerriero came off the bench to spark Mount St. Mary's to the victory.

Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) posted a career-high 12 rebounds along with six points while Henderson finished the night with eight points. The Mount has won three-straight games for the second time this season. It marks the first time since the 2005-06 season the Mountaineers registered a pair of three-game winning streaks.   

The game was the Mount's "Play 4 Kay" contest to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Now in its fifth year, the Mount raised over $1,400 in the first four years of the event. Mount St. Mary's wore a pink t-shirt and the Mount coaching staff all wore pink for the contest.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday at Knott Arena against Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is 3 p.m. Prior to the game, Mount St. Mary's will honor senior Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School).
