Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac defeated Mount St. Mary's 89-73 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.
Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced the Mount (8-13, 4-6 NEC) with 23 points while Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary C.I.) notched her first career 20-point performance with a career-best 21 points. It marked the first time that two players registered 20 points in a game since Dita Krumberga (21 points) and Brianna Gauthier (20 points) each posted 20 points against Robert Morris on Jan. 20, 2007.
Felicia Barron fueled six Bobcats (16-5, 8-2 NEC) in double figures with 19 points. Samantha Guastella (14 points), Jasmine Martin (13 points), Kari Goodchild (11 points), Jacinda Dunbar (10 points) and Brittany McQuain (10 points) also found double figures in the winning effort.
Quinnipiac took the lead from the start and increased its advantage going into halftime. Mount St. Mary's outplayed the Bobcats in the second half, but the Bobcats went on for its third-straight victory against the Mountaineers.
The Bobcats scored the first four points of the game thanks to baskets from Goodchild and McQuain. Henderson got the Mount on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer at 16:51 to trim the margin to 4-3, but Barron recorded consecutive layups to give Quinnipiac an 8-3 lead with 15:36 left in the half.
Henderson then scored six of the next eight points to trim the margin to 10-9 with 14:15 remaining. The two teams then traded points to maintain the one-point difference at 16-15 with 10:44 on the clock. Henderson posted 11 of the Mount's 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
Quinnipiac then scored the next 10 points and 28 of the final 35 points to go into the locker room with a 44-22 advantage. Martin paced the spurt with nine points while Barron added eight points in the final 10 minutes.
In the second half, the Bobcats grabbed a 30-point lead early in the stanza. Fueled by 19 points by Grossett, the Mount was able to trim the margin to 15 points with 1:53 remaining, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
The Mountaineers scored 51 points in the second half, marking the first time the squad posted 50 in a half since registering 55 points in the second half against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 23, 2008.
It was Henderson's third career 20-point performance. The junior missed her career-high by two points with all of her 20-point games coming this season. Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) added nine points and a career-high eight rebounds. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) tallied seven points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Saint Francis (Pa.). The game will be a part of the Mount's Annual Homecoming Festivities and will tip at 7 p.m.
