Women's Basketball Falls 67-55 To Howard In Final Non-Conference Game

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Howard downed Mount St. Mary's 67-55 in the final non-conference women's basketball game this season on Tuesday.

Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Canada/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) paced the Mount (6-7) with 14 points off the bench. Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) added 12 points and Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Saadia Doyle fueled the Bison (9-5) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tamoria Holmes posted 16 points, Cheyenne Curley-Payne registered 12 at the charity stripe and Zykia Brown recorded 10 points in squad's eighth-straight win.

Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half only to see Howard score the next 11 points to take the first meeting between the two programs since 1993.

After the Mount took a 36-35 lead with 13:51 on the clock, the Bison scored the next 11 points to take the lead for good.

Doyle started the run with two free throws with 13:07 on the clock to give Howard the lead it would not relinquish. Holmes then scored the next six points before Brown nailed a 3-pointer at 10:28 for a 46-36 advantage.

Christie halted the run with a trey at 8:59 to trim the margin to seven points, but Holmes converted two free throws and the Mountaineers could get no closer than eight points the rest of the night.

Howard scored the first basket of the night 30 seconds into the contest and led for the rest of the first half. Howard's largest margin in the first half was nine points after a Brown layup with 1:48 left in the stanza to help the Bison go into the locker room with a 29-21 lead.

Howard scored the first five points of the second half to extend the advantage to 33-21 with 18:39 left thanks to four points from Holmes and a free throw from Nicole Deterville.

Fueled by eight points by Grossett and five points from Henderson, the Mountaineers went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take its only lead of the game.

Grossett started the surge with a trey at 18:39 before Doyle answered with a jumper at 17:53.

Mount St. Mary's then scored the next 13 points. Henderson hit a 3-pointer at 17:27 and two free throws at 16:50 before Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) scored in the lane at 16:16 to make it a four-point game. Grossett then capped the run with five unanswered points on a 3-ball at 14:46 and two charity tosses at 13:51 to hand the Mount its only lead of the night at 36-35. Sparked by six points from Holmes, the Bison rolled off the next 11 points to earn the win.

Lonergan finished the game with six points while Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) recorded seven points in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's finishes non-conference play 4-7 and 3-2 at Knott Arena. The Mount, who won its first two Northeast Conference games for the first time since 2005-06, will restart league play on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
