Spoiler Alert: Softball Splits Twinbill With Monmouth To Eliminate Hawks From Postseason

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The senior battery of Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) helped spoil Monmouth season by leading Mount St. Mary's past the Hawks 5-2 in the nightcap of a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. Monmouth won the opener 5-1, but was eliminated from postseason contention after losing the second game of the twinbill.

Hanson allowed two runs on seven hits with one strikeout to earn her first win of the season in her final game at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. Hanson also had a hit and two runs scored at the plate in the contest. Reeder had a two-run homer during the Mount's (15-29, 5-13) three-run third to help clinch the victory. The senior also tied the career program record for appearances in the second game with 195 games played.

Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) got the Mountaineers off on the right foot in the nightcap with an RBI double in the second and made some stellar plays on defense at the hot corner. Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) had three hits and an RBI while Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each had an RBI on the day.

Emily deLong fueled the Hawks (21-21, 10-10 NEC) with three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Alicia Desanto added three hits, a run scored and an RBI while Lauren Sulick went 1-1 on the afternoon, including holding the Mount to one run in the opener to keep Monmouth's playoff hopes alive.

In the second game, Mount St. Mary's took the lead and never looked back to earn a 5-2 victory behind the arm of Hanson.

The Mount grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second after Hanson walked and Tuck doubled to right center to plate Hanson with the game's first run.

In the third, the Mountaineers added three runs to increase the advantage to 4-0. Zingle reached on an error and came around to score on Leddy's RBI single to left. Reeder then sent a full-count pitch over the left field wall for a two-run jack and a four-run lead.

Monmouth answered in the fourth with a deLong home run to center and an RBI single by Desanto to trim the margin in half.

The Mount responded with a run in the bottom of the stanza to retake a three-run lead at 5-2. With the bases loaded, Mizianty hit an opposite field single to score Hanson and the Mountaineers held on for the win.

In the opener, Monmouth scored four runs in the sixth to break a 1-all standstill to earn a 5-1 decision. deLong, Kate Kuzma, Colleen Kelly and Katie Schumacher each had an RBI in the inning to propel the Hawks to the victory.

Monmouth grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth aided by four Mountaineer errors before the Mount tied in the bottom of the inning on a Zingle single up the middle to plate Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital).

Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss in the opener.

It marks the second time in the spring that a Mount team has knocked a Monmouth team out of postseason play. The Mountaineers women's lacrosse team eliminated the Monmouth women's lacrosse team after beating Sacred Heart 10-9 in the final regular season game of the year.

Mount St. Mary's concludes the regular season at Robert Morris on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. The squad could again have an effect on the NEC Tournament. If the Mount takes one game against the Colonials, it would knock Robert Morris out of the top spot and give Sacred Heart the regular season title and right to host the upcoming NEC Tournament.
