Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (May 13, 2011)-Pinch runner
Brandon Scott scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 win over NEC regular season
champion Monmouth in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday
afternoon. The Hawks took the opener, 7-2.
Scott raced home all the way from second base on a Michael
Foster ground out with the winning run in the bottom the seventh
inning.
Zach Helman singled through the right side to open the inning
and Scott came on as a pinch runner. Josh Winter sacrificed
Scott to second and Mark Quaranta walked to put runners on first
and second for Foster, who grounded out to first base, but Scott
raced home on the play for the winning run.
The Hawks (33-17, 24-7 NEC) took the early lead in the second
game with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Chris
Perret singled up the middle top plate the first run while the
second scored on a wild pitch.
The Mountaineers (15-34, 7-24 NEC) answered in the bottom of the
first when Andrew Caron singled with two outs and Nott followed
with a homer to left to even the score. It was Nott's second
homer of the day.
In the top of the fifth, Monmouth loaded the bases on a pair
walks and a hit batsman with one, but reliever Dan Horner got out
of the jam with a double-play.
Tommy Flynn had a pair of bunt singles in the win. Buddy
Fields was the winning pitcher, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless
relief.
Marshall Thomason rebounded from a shaky first inning to have a
solid start for the Mount. Thomason allowed two runs and two
hits while striking out four in 4.1 innings of work.
In the opening game, Monmouth scored four times in the top of
the first inning to cruise to the victory. Ed Martin singled
and moved to third on a Ryan Terry two-base hit. Nick Pulsonetti
followed with a double to score the runners for a 2-0 lead.
Owen Stewart and Tim Bickford added RBI doubles in the frame as
well.
Josh Boyd extended the Monmouth lead to 7-0 with a three-run
homer to left field in the top of the third inning.
The Mount got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
fourth. Andrew Caron doubled and Kyl Kane was hit by a pitch
to start the inning. The runners moved up 90 feet on a Shane
Eyler groundout and Caron scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Nott's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inched the Mount
a bit closer, cut the deficit to 7-2. It was Nott's first
collegiate home run.
Nott finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the
offense. Nick Riley had a strong showing, pitching four
innings of scoreless relief, striking out six while allowing three
hits.
Andy McDonnell picked up the win for Monmouth, allowing two runs
in 5.2 innings of work.
The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow with a
nine-inning game at noon at the Mount's Straw Family Stadium.
