Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. - Central Connecticut State swept a Northeast
Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Sunday. The Blue Devils
won the opener 10-5 and then rallied in the nightcap, 8-7 on the
Mount's senior day.
Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) paced the Mount
(12-28, 4-12 NEC) with a 4-for-7 afternoon along with three RBIs
and two runs scored while Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad,
Calif./Carlsbad) went 5-for-9 in the two games with three RBIs and
a run scored. Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added a
4-for-5 performance with three runs scored and an RBI.
Katherine Knowles fueled the Blue Devils (25-20-1, 11-9 NEC)
with a 6-for-8 performance with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Arielle Bruno added four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Central Connecticut State jumped out to the
advantage and then had to rally to come from behind to complete the
twinbill sweep.
Trailing 7-5 in the sixth, the Blue Devils scored twice in the
frame to tie the game at 7 thanks to Amanda Dilworth scoring on a
wild pitch and an RBI fielder's choice by Stephanie Chotkevys.
Central Connecticut State won the game in the seventh when Macy
Stefanski touched home on a wild pitch.
Central Connecticut State grabbed the early advantage with a
Knowles RBI single in the first. The Blue Devils extended the
advantage to 3-0 in the second thanks to a two-run single by
Knowles.
Mount St. Mary's got on the scoreboard with a run in the second
to trim the deficit to 3-1. Zimmerman singled to left field and
came around to score on Mizianty's RBI single to center.
Central Connecticut State answered right back with a run in the
third on a Kate Hoffman sacrifice fly to reclaim a three-run
lead.
The Mountaineers pushed four runs across in the fourth to grab a
5-4 advantage. Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph), Zimmerman,
Alyssa Silipino and Kristen Collins each knocked in a run in the
stanza with an RBI base hit to give Mount St. Mary's the edge.
The Mount added a run in the fifth on Nicole Reeder's (Glen
Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) run-scoring single down the left
field line, but the Blue Devils registered the final three runs to
come away with an 8-7 decision.
Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) got the start in
the opener on senior day and pitched 4.1 innings before Amanda
Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tossed the final 2.2
innings.
In the opener, Central Connecticut State scored six runs in the
second to take the lead for good and never looked back for a 10-5
win.
With the game tied at 1, the Blue Devils registered six runs to
grab a 7-1 advantage. Sarah Vlahos broke the standstill with an RBI
double before Dilworth added an RBI single, Knowles a two-run
double, Kelsey Barlow an RBI double and Chotkevys capped the
six-run rally with an RBI single.
The Mountaineers rallied for four runs in the second to trim the
margin to 7-5. Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and
Zimmerman started the inning with consecutive doubles before
Mizianty added a two-run single and Zingle plated a run on an RBI
single to center.
Central Connecticut State sealed the win with two runs in the
fifth on a Bruno two-run single and a run in the sixth on a
Stefaniski run-scoring single.
The Blue Devils started the game with a run in the first on a
Brown RBI single to left field, but Mount St. Mary's responded in
the bottom of the inning with a Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North
Penn) run-scoring single to center. Central Connecticut State then
scored six in the second and went on for the 10-5 win.
Everist got her first start on the mound in 2011 and pitched the
first three innings before Pagano tossed the final four frames.
Everist, Hanson, Reeder, Zimmerman and Zingle were honored in
between the two games on Sunday.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday in the final
doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows for 2001 when Monmouth
comes to town. First pitch is 12 p.m.
