Long Island Takes Two From Softball

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Long Island swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Blackbirds (10-27, 2-4 NEC) won the opener 7-4 and then took the nightcap, 5-3.

Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) paced the Mount (9-19, 1-5 NEC) with a 6-for-8 performance and three runs scored while Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added her fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the opener, and three RBIs in the two games.

Emily Kakuska paced the Brooklyn program with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Sterling Hoham added three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs while Karina Cervantes posted four hits and two RBIs in the winning effort.

Long Island rallied to take the lead twice and went on for a 7-4 win in the opener.

After Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 4 in the top of the inning, the Blackbirds retook the advantage in the bottom of the fourth and then added two runs in the sixth to seal the victory.

With the game tied at 4, Kakuska plated the go-ahead run with an RBI ground out in the fourth. In the sixth, Hoham doubled home a run and then scored on a passed ball for a 7-4 lead.

The Mount jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on Everist's 16th career home run.

Long Island cut the margin to 2-1 in the second thanks to a Cervantes RBI infield single, but the Mountaineers answered in the third with consecutive ground-rule doubles by Beebe and Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to reclaim a two-run edge.

The Blackbirds then posted three runs in the third to grab a 4-3 margin. Amanda MacIntosh plated a run on an infield single and Cervantes reached on an error to even the game at 3 before Brooklyn York brought home a run on an RBI groundout to give Long Island the advantage.

Mount St. Mary's answered in the next inning to tie the game at 4. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) singled, advanced to second on the throw before pinch runner Lindsay Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) touched home on Cat Clifford's (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) run-scoring single to center. The Blackbirds then scored the final three runs to come away with the victory.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) took the loss for the Mount in the opener and registered four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Everist gave the Mountaineers the early advantage again before the Blackbirds scored the five of the final seven runs of the game to complete the sweep.

The Mount grabbed the edge in the third when Beebe started the rally with a single to left field and scored when Everist reached on an error for a 1-0 lead.

Cervantes answered in the bottom of the inning for Long Island to tie the game with an RBI single to left field. Kakuska gave the Blackbirds the lead for good on a three-run home for a 4-1 edge. Hoham hit a solo homer in the sixth to increase the advantage to 5-1.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the seventh to trim the margin to 5-3, but could get no closer. After Beebe registered her sixth hit of the afternoon and Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) hit a ground-rule double before Zingle plated Beebe on an RBI single to left and Mizianty came home to score on a passed ball.

Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had three strikeouts in the loss in the second game.

Everist sits in second place on the program's all-time career home run list and has closed to within two homers of Danyale Goode's (18) program record. Beebe moved into eighth place for career runs scored (70) while Zingle moved into fifth place for total bases (190) and Everist jumped into eighth place (164) in the category.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at Wagner. Game time is 12 p.m.
