Sacred Heart Takes Two From Softball

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. The Pioneers took the opener 7-3 and then won the nightcap 11-2 in six innings.

Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced the Mount (9-17, 1-3 NEC) with three hits and three runs scored. Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) had a hit and two RBIs in the opener while Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) notched a two-run homer for her first collegiate home run in the nightcap.

Liz Tsipouras paced Sacred Heart (16-12, 5-1 NEC) with four hits, six RBIs and three runs scored while Taylor Froelich added six hits, four runs scored and two RBIs on the afternoon.

In the opener, the Pioneers scored the first five runs of the game after posting a run in the third and four in the fourth to take the lead it would not relinquish. Tsipouras singled down the left field line in the second to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 edge. In the fourth, Froelich registered a two-run triple and then scored on an error before Tsipouras notched her second RBI of the game on a single to right center for a 5-0 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's rallied for three runs in the fifth to trim the margin to 5-3. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) started the inning by being hit with a pitch. After Leddy singled through the left side, Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) singled down the left field line to plate Beebe and Zimmerman brought home Leddy and Zingle with a triple to right center.

Shannon McCoy sealed the win for the Pioneers with a two-run single to right field in the sixth for a 7-3 lead.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) started for the Mountaineers and took the loss while Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tossed the final two innings in the opener.

Sacred Heart continued its success from the opener by scoring the first seven runs of the game en route to an 11-2 victory.

Tsipouras gave the Pioneers the lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 margin. Fueled by a Courtney Lee two-run double, Sacred Heart added six runs in the third. Tsipouras, Annie Dreher and Carley Rudloff each added RBIs in the stanza while Dreher scored on an illegal pitch for a 7-0 lead.

Mount St. Mary's posted two runs in the fourth to trim the margin to 7-2. Leddy opened the inning with a single through the left side before Mizianty notched her first collegiate homer.

The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the inning on a Tsipouras sacrifice fly and then ended the game with three runs in the sixth thanks to a Tsipouras RBI double and a two-run single by Nicole Sidor.

Sadowl started the second game for the Mountaineers and took the loss while Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) tossed the final 3.1 innings.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday at Long Island. First pitch is 1 p.m. Mount St. Mary's was scheduled to play a doubleheader on Thursday at Morgan State, but that twinbill has been postponed. Make up date and time to be announced.
