Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 22, 2011)-Mount St.
Mary's lost both games of a Northeast Conference doubleheader on a
rainy Friday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on
campus. The Mount fell 7-0 in the opener and had a rally fall
short in a 10-8 loss in the second game.
In the opening game, Sacred Heart's M.J. Schifano faced the
minimum 21 batters while tossing a two-hit shutout in the 7-0
win.
The Pioneers scored three times in the first and four more in
the second to take control of the game. In the first, J.J.
Edwards had an RBI single to plate Schifano, who led the game off
with a single. The second run scored on a Mount error and
Steve Tedesco added an RBI single in the inning.
Mount starter Buddy Fields walked the bases loaded with one out
in the second, giving way to reliever Dan Horner. Edwards
greeted Horner with a two-run single with Rob Griffith following
with an RBI base hit. John Murphy's sacrifice fly made it
7-0.
The Mount's Sam Nott singled to center field to open the third
inning, but was erased on a double-play. Nott led off the
sixth with a walk, but a double-play cleared the bases.
Tommy Flynn opened the bottom of the seventh with an infield
single, but Schifano again got a double-play to erase the base
runner.
Horner allowed one earned run and four hits in 5.2 innings of
relief for the Mount. He retired the side in order in four of
the final five innings.
Edwards went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI for the
Pioneers in the opening game.
Sacred Heart held off a Mount St. Mary's rally to earn a 10-8
win in the second game that was played in a steady rain.
The Pioneers (21-18, 13-7 NEC) scored a pair of runs in the top
of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Hunter Phillips had an RBI
double and Edwards a sacrifice fly in the frame.
The Mount answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
inning to even the score. Alex Andrews walked and moved to
second on a Tony Quaranta sacrifice bunt. Flynn then singled
to left field to plate Andrews to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Flynn, who moved to second on the throw on his single, advanced to
third on a groundout and scored on a Sacred Heart error.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the fifth and five more in the
sixth to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The Mount, however, chipped
away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 9-8 in the eighth
inning.
Tony Quaranta's RBI single in the sixth made the score 9-3 and
the Mount added two more runs in the seventh on a Mark Quaranta
infield hit and a wild pitch.
The Mount rallied for three more runs in the eighth to cut the
deficit to 9-8. With two outs and no one on base, Flynn
looped a double to left field to start the rally. Walker's
RBI double down the left field line scored Flynn to make the score
9-6. Caron and Mark Quaranta each walked to load the bases
for Shane Eyler, who laced a single through the right side to plate
two runs. Quaranta, however, was caught rounding too far off
the second base bag to end the rally. The Pioneers added an
insurance run in the ninth for the win.
Flynn went 2-for-5 with two runs scored to pace the Mount in
game two. Starting pitcher Karl Lamont allowed nine runs (six
earned) in 5.2 innings. Michael Locondro pitched 1.1 innings
of scoreless relief while Nick Riley allowed an unearned run
in two innings of work.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, April 26, at
Bucknell.
