Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23, 2011)-Mount St.
Mary's defeated Wagner, 22-5, to clinch the Northeast Conference
regular season title on Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action
at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
Senior face-off specialist Ben
Trapp went 21-for-21 (1.000) on face offs in the game to tie
for the second-best single-game mark in NCAA history. Zach
Smith (Sacred Heart) holds the record by winning all 25 of his
face-offs against Hartford on April 25, 2007 while Alex Smith of
Delaware was 21-for-21 on face-offs against Wagner on February 28,
2006.
Brett
Schmidt and Mike
Adkins each scored four goals to pace the Mount offense, which
had nine players record multiple-point games.
Cody
Lehrer had three goals and two assists while Andrew
Scalley added two goals and three assists in the win. Bryant
Schmidt and Brooks
Bradley posted two goals each with Mark
Stapor and Bryan
Kane each adding a goal and an assist in the win. Eric
Ososki had three assists as well for the Mount.
Daniel
Stranix, Anthony
Golden and Kyle
Yates each chipped in a goal in the victory while T.C.
DiBartolo made six saves while allowing two goals in the first
half. Trapp added a game-high 14 ground balls in the win.
Mount St. Mary's rattled off a string of 11 consecutive goals
spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second half
to seal the victory, taking a commanding 16-2 lead with 4:11 left
in the third quarter.
Mount St. Mary's outshot the Seahawks 51-25 in the game and held
a 40-19 edge in ground balls.
Wagner's Colin O'Rourke had two goals and an assist in the
loss.
The Mount win coupled with the Robert Morris 16-15 win at Bryant
clinched the regular season title. The Mount is 4-0 in
league, one game ahead of Quinnipiac (3-1) with one game left in
the regular season.
The Mount defeated the Bobcats, 16-10, last week and owns the
tiebreaker if the teams end tied at the end of the regular
season.
Mount St. Mary's (7-5, 4-0) will host the Northeast Conference
Championship on May 6 and 8.
The Mount closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 30,
when Bryant visits for a 1:00 p.m. game. The Mountaineers
will honor the 2011 senior class prior to the game.
