Softball Splits Conference Opening Series With Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. - Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) smacked a three-run homer in the fourth inning to propel Mount St. Mary's past Quinnipiac 11-6 in Northeast Conference (NEC) softball action on Saturday. The Bobcats won the second game, 6-2.

Zingle drilled her second home run of the year in the fourth to erase a 5-3 deficit and give the Mount (9-15, 1-1 NEC) the lead for good in the conference opener for the Mountaineers. The senior for the day posted three hits, four RBIs and a run scored.

Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored while Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) added three hits, three runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon. Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) also homered in the first game.

Jordan Paolucci paced the Bobcats (17-14, 1-1 NEC) with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs on the afternoon while Heather Swartzburg picked up the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts.

In the opener, Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 5-2 deficit to score nine of the last 10 runs to start league play 1-0 for the third-straight year.

Trailing 5-2 in the fourth, the Mount scored five times in the inning to take the lead for good. Mizianty started the rally with two outs when she singled to left field. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) reached on an error before Leddy plated Mizianty with a single down the right field line. Zingle then smacked a three-run homer to left field to hand the Mountaineers the lead for good before Everist followed with a solo shot to increase the edge to 7-5.

The Bobcats answered with a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Paolucci RBI single to left field to trim the margin to 7-6.

Mount St. Mary's then sealed the win with four runs in the top of the seventh. Zimmerman singled up the middle and scored on a wild pitch. Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), Mizianty and Beebe posted consecutive walks and touched home on Leddy's two-run single to right before Beebe scored on a wild pitch for an 11-6 lead.

The Mount jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the contest with two runs in the second. Zimmerman started the inning with a leadoff-opposite field home run to right field. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) reached on a bunt single and came around to score on Mizianty's RBI bunt base hit.

Quinnipiac rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 3-2 edge. Ashley Heiberger plated two runs on a two-run double and then came across the plate on a double-steal attempt. Mount St. Mary's then posted nine runs in the final four innings to come away with the victory.

NicolePagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) had six strikeouts on the mount to pick up the win.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats posted three runs in the third to take the lead for good in a 6-2 victory. Joelle Jacobsen scored on an error and Alex Alba smacked a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead in the third.

Mount St. Mary's posted two runs in the sixth to trim the margin to 3-2. Mizianty started the inning with a double and Leddy singled before Mizianty touched home on Zingle's RBI fielder's choice and then Leddy scored on the throw.

The Bobcats added three runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win thanks to RBIs by Paolucci and Jacobsen while Briget Figmic scored on a wild pitch.

Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had two strikeouts in the loss.

Everist moved into second place in program history with 15 career homers.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday at Sacred Heart. Game time is 1 p.m.
