Mount Softball Splits with First-Place Bryant

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 18, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's split a doubleheader with first-place Bryant on Monday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  The Mount posted a 1-0 win in the opening game before falling 7-6 in game two.

In the opener, Chloe Mizianty's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Mount (14-22, 4-8 NEC) to victory.  Mizianty, who was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, line a 3-2 pitch over the center fielder's head to score pinch-runner Alexa Tuck with the only run of the game.

Cat Clifford started the rally with a lead-off single that was roped down the left field line.  Tuck pinch-ran for Clifford and moved to second on a Nicole Pagano sacrifice bunt.  Taylor Beebe followed with a single to center field to put runners on the corners with one out for Mizianty, who came through with the game-winning hit.

Pagano tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout for the Mountaineers in the opening game.  She pitched out of trouble throughout the game, including a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh.  Pagano allowed seven walks and hit one batter in the game, but stranded nine Bryant baserunners to post her second shutout of the season.

Erin Leddy was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one while Beebe was 2-for-4 in the victory.  Bryant starter Samantha Houseal allowed one earned run and six hits and 6.1 innings to take the loss.  Lauren Guy had two of Bryant's three hits in the game.

In the second game of the twinbill, Bryant rallied from a 4-2 deficit and held on for the 7-6 victory.  The Bulldogs (20-16, 10-4 NEC) scored two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead.  Lindsay Martin's bloop single to left field plated Guy and Aubrey Mable to put Bryant ahead, 2-0.

The Mount answered with a four-run second inning to take the lead.  Clifford and Nicole Reeder were each hit by a pitch and Courtney Mason walked to load the bases for Beebe, who plated all three runners with a double to left field.  Mizianty followed with a double to center to score Beebe to put the Mount ahead, 4-2.

Bryant chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the third and fifth innings to even the score.  In the third, Amy Weinberg's RBI single scored Laura Bowen to make it a 4-3 Mount lead.  In the fifth, Bowen homered down the left field line to knot the game at 4-4.

Bryant took the lead in the top of the sixth when Christina Eringis blasted a two-run home run to center field to put the Bulldogs ahead, 6-4.  Bryant added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 7-4.

The Mountaineers rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Mizianty reached on an error and Beth Everist belted a two-run homer to deep left field to make it a 7-6 game.  Bryant summoned Jennifer Jacob out of the bullpen and she struck out the final two batters to perserve the win.

Everist tied the Mount's all-time home run record with her two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The senior now has 18 career long balls, matching Danyale Good (2003-06) for the top spot on the Mount's all-time list.

Zingle went 2-for-4 in game two to pace the Mount offense.  Amanda Sadowl allowed six runs in 5.1 innings to take the loss while Amanda Hanson allowed one run in 1.2 innings of relief.

Weinberg and Kate Murray each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Bryant in game two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday, April 20, with a 3:00 p.m. home game against George Mason.
