Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. - Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) hit
two homers and knocked in six runs in the opener while Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) hit a bases-clearing double in
the nightcap to propel Mount St. Mary's to a Northeast Conference
(NEC) doubleheader sweep against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday. The
Mount won the opener 17-3 and then rallied to take the nightcap,
8-7.
Mizianty went 4-for-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs
scored in the first game and then added a hit, two runs scored and
an RBI in the nightcap. Zingle posted two hits, three RBIs and a
homer in the opener, but the senior big moment on the day came when
she broke a 4-all standstill with a bases-loaded bases-clearing
double in the sixth to help the Mountaineers (13-21, 3-7 NEC)
complete its first sweep of the year.
Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added three hits and
four RBIs, including smacking her fifth home run of the year and
the 17th of her career in the first inning of the opener to give
Mount St. Mary's the lead it would not relinquish. The senior is
now one round tripper away from Danyale Goode's (18, 2003-06)
all-time career mark. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) contributed three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in
the two games.
Taylor Daneille paced the Red Flash (8-30, 1-9 NEC) with three
hits, five RBIs and two runs scored while Megan Layne posted four
hits, two runs scored and an RBI on the day.
In the opener, the Mount took the advantage in the bottom of the
first and registered a run in every inning to go on for a 17-3
victory.
Mizianty got the rally started in the first with a bunt base hit
and then came around to score of Everist's line-drive homer to left
field for a 2-0 edge. The squad increased the advantage in the
second after Reeder reached by being hit with the pitch and then
touching home on Nicole Pagano's (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) double
to center field for a three-run margin.
Saint Francis (Pa.) answered with two runs in the third thanks
to a high chopper that got through the infield into center field to
plate two runs off the bat of Darnielle to trim the deficit to
3-2.
Mizianty homered to lead off the fourth to restore a two-run
lead, but the Red Flash answered right back with an RBI infield
single on a slow roller by Katie McMellen.
Mount St. Mary's then put the game away in the fourth when 13
runs crossed the plate to increase the advantage to 17-3. Mizianty
powered the inning with two hits and five RBIs including a grand
slam. Zingle hit a three-run jack in the stanza while Reeder,
Pagano, Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) and Alexa Tuck
(Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) also registered RBIs in the stanza and
Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored on a wild
pitch to account for the squad's 13-run outburst.
Pagano picked up the win and recorded six strikeouts in five
innings of work.
In the nightcap, Saint Francis (Pa.) jumped out to a 4-0 lead
before the Mount scored the next eight runs en route to an 8-7
victory.
Trailing 4-0, the Mountaineers started the come back when Jenna
Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) opened the inning with a
single to center and touched home on a wild pitch. Mizianty then
singled to right field to bring home Reeder, who reached on an
infield single to trim the margin in half at 4-2.
Mizianty was the catalyst in the fifth when she walked and came
home to score when Everist legged out an infield single to second
to make it a one-run game.
The Mount then used a five-run sixth to take the lead for good.
Reeder started the decisive rally with a single to left field. With
two outs, Bre Lohman (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) was hit with the
pitch and Mizianty walked to load the bases before Leddy coaxed a
walk on a full count to force home a run and tie the game at 4.
Zingle then cleared the bases with a double to left field to give
Mount St. Mary's the lead it would not relinquish at 7-4. Everist
added an insurance run on a bouncer up the middle for an 8-4
advantage going into the top of the seventh.
The Red Flash posted one more threat with the aid of a three-run
homer by Darnielle to cut the deficit to 8-7 with one out. Amanda
Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) relieved Amanda Sadowl
(Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to record the final two outs.
Saint Francis (Pa.) did put a runner in scoring position thanks to
an Ashley Thomas double, but Hanson ended the game with a
check-swing third strike to earn her second collegiate save.
The Red Flash scored the first four runs in the game after
scoring twice in each of the first two innings. Paige Smith hit a
two-run homer in the first while Layne and McMellen each recorded
RBIs in the second for a 4-0 lead. The Mountaineers then scored the
next eight runs and held on for the victory.
Sadowl got the win after throwing 6.1 innings with three
strikeouts.
Along with Everist inching closer to the program's home run
mark, Zingle moved up in four categories on the afternoon. The
senior moved into third place for career hits (150), third in RBIs
(82), sixth in homers (10) and seventh in doubles (24). Reeder
moved into second place for games played (185) and cracked the
Top-10 in total bases (158) while Sadowl moved into eighth in
strikeouts (141).
