STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wagner downed Mount St. Mary's twice in a
Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Sunday. The
Seahawks (5-21, 3-7 NEC) won the opener 4-2 and then took the
nightcap, 2-0.
Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) paced the Mount
(9-21, 1-7 NEC) with three hits and a run scored while Courtney
Mason (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) went 2-for-2 in the second
game.
Judy Betz picked up a pair of wins on the afternoon for Wagner
after not allowing an earned run (two unearned runs) with five
strikeouts in two complete-game efforts. Amanda Garcia had two hits
and three RBIs while Kristen Matteoni posted two hits and three
runs scored on the day.
Wagner took the advantage and then rallied for two runs in the
fifth to break a 2-all tie to earn a 4-2 win in the opener.
After Mount St. Mary's tied the game in the third, the Seahawks
reclaimed the lead for good with two runs in the fifth thanks to an
RBI double by Ashley Olsen and a Brittany Huss run-scoring single
up the middle.
Wagner took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning.
Garcia smacked a two-run double to give the Seahawks the
advantage.
In the third, the Mount answered with two runs to knot the
opener at 2. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) reached on a
fielder's choice and Mizianty doubled to left center before
Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) plated Beebe when she
reached on an error and Mizianty touched home on a double-steal
attempt. The Seahawks then scored twice in the fifth to come away
with the victory.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started for the
Mountaineers and took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings with two
strikeouts. Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) pitched the
final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
In the second game, Wagner posted a run in the third and a run
in the fourth and held the Mountaineers off the scoreboard to
complete the two-game sweep. Jamie El-Aazami broke a scoreless game
with an RBI bunt play in the third before Garcia hit a sacrifice
fly in the fourth for the two runs in the game.
The Mount's best threat in the contest came in the sixth when
the squad loaded the bases with one out. Mason singled up the
middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Mizianty
walked and Zingle singled to left field to load the bases. Betz got
out of the jam with a pair of infield pop ups.
Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) pitched her best
game of the season, allowing two runs on four hits with one
strikeout in a complete-game loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at Our Lady of the
Meadows Field against UMBC. Game time is 2 p.m. Starting with the
doubleheader against the Retrievers, the Mount will be at home for
seven of the final nine series, including four-straight teams
coming to Emmitsburg.
