Leddy's Three-Run Blast Fuels Softball Past Iona, 4-3

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) smacked a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lift Mount St. Mary's past Iona 4-3 in non-conference softball action at the UMBC Tournament on Saturday.

Leddy erased a 2-1 deficit and handed the Mount (3-2) a 4-2 advantage with her first home run of the year in the fifth inning. It was the sophomore's third career home run.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) picked up her first win of the year after allowing three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort with nine strikeouts. Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added a solo homer in the second for her first round tripper of the year.

Alyssa Maiese paced the Gaels (5-5) with two hits, including a two-run homer in the first. Maiese also took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts.

Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score the next four runs and held on for a 4-3 win against Iona to improve to 2-1 at the UMBC Tournament.

Trailing 2-0, Everist cut the margin in half with a solo homer to center field.

The Mountaineers then scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) started the rally by being hit with the pitch. With one out, Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) walked before Leddy smacked a three-run homer to left field.

Iona scored a run in the seventh and got another runner in scoring position, but came up short in its comeback attempt. Jodi Peterson hit a solo homer with one out in the seventh to trim the margin to 4-3. Tessa Earley then reached on an error. After a fly out, Maiese singled through the left side to move Earley to second, but Allysa James flied out to center to get Pagano out of the jam and ended the game.

Iona grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Maiese two-run homer to left center, but Everist and Leddy both went deep to help the Mountaineers rally for the victory.

Everist moved into third place for career home runs (14) while Reeder moved into fifth place for career games played (156). Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) moved into eighth place for at-bats (439).

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday in the final day of the UMBC Tournament. Opponent and time to be announced.
