Softball Falls At Coppin State, 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. - Coppin State defeated Mount St. Mary's 3-1 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to the weather.

Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced the Mount (8-14) with a hit and an RBI while Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) scored the squad's lone run of the afternoon.

Stacey Burgos fueled the Eagles (6-7) with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs and a run scored while Charma Robinson added two runs scored, an RBI and a base hit. Paige Arnold allowed one run on one hit with seven strikeouts to earn the victory.

Coppin State posted a run in the bottom of the third to break a 1-all standstill and held on for its second-straight win against Mount St. Mary's.

After the Mount tied the game at 1 in the top of the third, the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Robinson walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and touched home on Burgos' RBI double down the left field line for a 2-1 advantage.

After Coppin State took the lead in the third, Mount St. Mary's had a runner on in each of the next three innings but could not score. The best chance came in the sixth when Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) reached on an error and moved to second on a Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) sacrifice bunt. Arnold then recorded the next two outs with a strikeout and a line out to end the threat.

The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Robinson smacked a homer to left field.

The Mountaineers tied the game in the top of the third. Beebe walked and touched home non Leddy's two-out double to left center. Coppin State scored in similar fashion in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) had eight strikeouts in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday when the squad opens up Northeast Conference play at Quinnipiac. First pitch is 12 p.m.
