Nott's Pinch-Hit Two-Run Double Powers Baseball Past UMBC, 8-6

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sam Nott (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Daulphin) hit a pinch-hit two-run double in the eighth to lift Mount St. Mary's past UMBC 8-6 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.

Trailing 6-5 with two outs and runners on second and third in the eighth, Nott entered the game as a pinch hitter and lined a 1-2 pinch off the chalk in front of the third base bag and stayed fair down the left field line to plate Kyle Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and Brandon Scott (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) with the tying and go-ahead runs to give the Mount (8-12) a 7-6 lead. Mark Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola Blakefield [Md.]) added an RBI single to increase the lead and Andrew Schrock (Vienna, Va./James Madison) allowed a runner to reach on an error, but closed out the game to earn the save.

Zach Helman (Waynesboro, Md./Waynesboro) paced the Mountaineers with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) posted two hits, including a home run and two RBIs while Mark Quaranta finished the game with three hits, an RBI and a run scored in the winning effort.

Max Himmstein fueled the Retrievers (3-12) with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored while Kevin Kean posted two hits, a run scored and an RBI in the loss.

The two teams battled back and forth for most of the game before Mount St. Mary's posted four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead and held on for the victory.

Helman and Kane started the rally in the eighth with back-to-back singles. Tony Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola Blakefield [Md.]) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Scott reached on fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. Trailing by two runs, Flynn cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Helman. Scott then stole second to put runners at second and third for Nott, who smacked the ball off the chalk and down the left field line to score two runs. Mark Quaranta followed Nott's clutch pinch-hit double with a single to center field to bring home Nott with an insurance run and hand the Mountaineers an 8-6 lead.

Mount St. Mary's started the scoring in the game in the second when Helman belted a home run to center for a 1-0 lead.

UMBC tied the game in the fourth when Casey Medairy coaxed a bases loaded walk.

The Mount answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a run to retake the advantage at 2-1. Mark Quaranta singled to the opposite field, moved to second on a walk pitch and came around to score on Helman's single to center.

The Retrievers registered three runs in the fifth to grab a 4-2 edge thanks to a Himmelstein two-run double and a DJ Ream RBI double.

Mount St. Mary's chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) reached on an error in the sixth and touched home on Shane Eyler's (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) run-scoring single to right field to trim the margin to 4-3. Flynn belted his first homer of the season in the seventh to tie the game at 4.

UMBC struck right back with two in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. Kean induced a bases loaded walk and Brian Klukowowicz hit a sacrifice fly, but the Mountaineers scored four times in the bottom of the inning to come from behind for the victory.

Marshall Thomason (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) started for the Mount and pitched 4.2 innings while Dan Horner (Easton, Md./Easton) (1.2 innings), Nick Riley (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) (one inning), Karl Lamont (Williamsburg, Iowa/Williamsburg) (0.2 innings) and Schrock (one inning) also pitched for the Mount. Lamont picked up the win to improve to 3-3 on the year.
