Softball Concludes Mount St. Mary's Tournament With Two Losses

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games in the final day of the Mount St. Mary's Softball Tournament on Sunday. The Mount (8-13) lost 16-10 against Cornell and then fell 4-0 to Bucknell in the nightcap.

Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) paced the Mountaineers in the loss to the Big Red (10-11-1) with a 4-for-4 performance and four RBIs. Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added three hits, three RBIs and a run scored, and Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) posted three hits and a run scored in opener. Zingle added a hit in the loss to the Bison (7-19) while Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) fueled the Mountaineers with a 3-for-3 performance in the nightcap.

In the opener against Cornell, the Big Red scored eight times in the third and four times in the fourth to erase a 5-1 deficit and grab a 13-5 lead on its way to a 16-10 victory.

Mount St. Mary's erased a 1-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Erin Belles gave Cornell a 1-0 edge on her second homer of the tournament in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) tied the game with a bunt to score Lindey Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional). Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) then coaxed a bases loaded walk before Leddy cleared the bases with a double to center field for a four-run lead.

Cornell answered right back with eight runs in the top of the third fueled by a bases clearing triple by Marissa Amiraian and a two-run double by Kristen Towne. Jenny Edwards then sparked a four-run fourth with a two-run single to hand the Big Red a 13-5 lead.

The Mount scored twice in the fourth. Courtney Mason (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) walked and Zingle singled through the left side and both runners touched home on Everist's RBI double.

After Cornell scored three times in the sixth, the Mountaineers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Mason started the rally with her first collegiate base hit before Leddy followed with a single. Everist plated Mason on a sacrifice fly and Leddy touched home on a double steal attempt to cut the margin to 16-9. Mount St. Mary's added a run in the seventh when Everist singled home Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad).

Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started for the Mount and took the loss while Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) pitched the final four innings.

In the final game of the Mount St. Mary's Softball Tournament, Bucknell (7-19) broke a scoreless standstill with three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to earn a 4-0 victory. Allison Ford doubled home the first two runs of the game in the sixth before Laura Sandford added an RBI single in the inning and Jessie Snyder capped the win with an RBI single in the seventh.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) started for the Mountaineers in the nightcap and took the loss.

Mount Mary's starts a six-team 12-game road trip on Wednesday at Coppin State. Game time is 4 p.m.
