Softball Drops A Pair In The Mount St. Mary's Tournament

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games in the Mount St. Mary's Softball Tournament on Saturday. The Mount (8-11) fell 4-3 to Cornell in the opener and then dropped a 4-2 decision in the second game of the afternoon.

Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) paced the Mountaineers with three hits and one run scored in the two games while Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.

In the game against the Big Red (7-10-1), Cornell scored a run in the seventh inning to break a 3-all standstill to earn the victory. Kristen Towne knocked in the decisive run with an RBI single to right field.

Mount St. Mary's had a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning by Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zingle, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat and the game.

Cornell opened the scoring in the contest with a run in the first on a bases loaded walk by Christina Villalon.

The Mount answered with a run in the third after Mizianty tripled left field and touched home on Taylor Beebe's (Olympia, Wash./Capital) bunt to tie the game at 1.

Each team scored twice in the sixth. The Big Red used an Erin Belles two-run homer in the top of the stanza while the Mount had a Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) bases loaded hit by pitch and a Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) bases loaded walk to even the game at 3. Cornell then scored once in the next stanza to take the opener of the tournament.

Pagano, who had seven strikeouts, took the loss for the Mountaineers.

The second game of the tournament played similar from the first with Bucknell jumping out to the lead, Mount St. Mary's rallying to tie the game and the Bison scoring the final two runs to take a 4-2 decision.

After the Mount tied the game at 2, Bucknell scored a run in the fifth to take the lead for good on a Mallory Lyons RBI double to left field and Elyse Colmenero sealed the win with an RBI single to center in the seventh.

The Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game with two runs in the first inning.

Mount St. Mary's came back to even the game at 2 with two runs in the third. Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) walked and scored when Katy Bobbitt (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) reached on an error and then Bobbitt scored on a wild pitch. Bucknell then scored the final two runs of the game to earn the decision.

Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss in the second game for the Mountaineers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday in the final day of the Mount St. Mary's Tournament. The Mount will face Cornell at 9 a.m. and Bucknell at 1 p.m.
