Mount St. Mary's Rolls to 21-7 Win over VMI

Lexington, Va. (March 22, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's defeated VMI, 21-7, in men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. Brett Schmidt scored a career-high five goals to lead the Mountaineers in the win.

Schmidt finished the day with six points (5g, 1a) while Andrew Scalley and Bryant Schmidt each added five-point efforts. Scalley had four goals and an assist while Bryant Schmidt chipped in two goals and three assists.

Cody Lehrer added four goals for the Mount while Anthony Golden, Daniel Stranix, Connor Carey, Mike Adkins, Bryan Kane and Nick Raines also scored in the win.

Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 11 saves while allowing six goals in 54:11 of action for the Mount. Chris Klaiber made one save over the final 5:49 of the game.

The 21 goals are the most in a game by a Mount team since a 21-5 victory over Siena on April 22, 2001. The Mount scored at least four goals in each quarter in the victory.

The Mount (3-3) started quickly, scoring twice in the opening 1:34 to take the lead. Golden scored 59 seconds into the game and then dished out the assist on Scalley's first goal just 35 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.

The Keydets (2-6) fought back with a pair of Drew Leonard goals, but twin brothers Bryant and Brett Schmidt each scored to close out the quarter, giving the Mountaineers a 4-2 lead.

VMI opened the scoring in the second quarter on a Colin Bosse goal, but the Mount took control from there, rattling off six consecutive goals to grab a 10-3 advantage.

Brett Schmidt opened the scoring run for the Mount with Carey notching his first goal of the season a minute later to make the score 6-3. Brett Schmidt's third goal of the game gave the Mount a four-goal advantage. Scalley, Adkins and Lehrer rounded out the scoring spurt to push the Mount lead to 10-3 with 49 seconds left in the half.

VMI's Chris Rossie scored eight seconds after the Lehrer goal to cut the Mount advantage to 10-4 at the break.

The Mount added to its lead by scoring six times in the third quarter. Lehrer and Scalley had back-to-back scores 48 seconds apart to push the lead to 12-4. After VMI's Leonard scored, the Mount scored the next three goals, including a pair with the Mount on the extra-man. Stranix started the three-goal run with his fifth goal of the year before Brett and Bryant Schmidt added consecutive scores for a 15-5 lead.

Leonard's fourth goal of the game for VMI halted the run, but Lehrer notched his third goal of the contest to give the Mount a 16-6 lead after three quarters of play.

Scalley scored on an extra-man opportunity with Schmidt following with his fifth goal of the game to push the lead to 18-to-6. The Mount added to the lead with the first career goals from Kane and Raines. Bosse's scored an extra-man goal before Lehrer rounded out the scoring in the game with his fourth goal of the day.

The Mount outshot the Keydets, 46-39, in the game while VMI held a 31-20 advantage in ground balls. Ben Trapp won 12-of-24 face-offs while the Mount was 4-for-5 on extra-man opportunities.

The Mount hosts Loyola at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.

Game Notes: The Mount holds a 16-2 lead in the all-time series with VMI since the Mount moved to NCAA Division In in 1989...The Mountaineers have won six in a row against VMI and 12 of the past 13 matchups...Lehrer has scored 14 goals over the past three games and leads the team with 16 goals on the year...Scalley stretched his streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 23 with his five-point game...Scalley leads the team with 18 points (12g, 6a) this season.
