EMMITSSBURG, Md. - Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph)
tossed a three hit shutout to lead Mount St. Mary's past Coppin
State 1-0 in the opener of a non-conference softball game on
Thursday. The Eagles rallied for a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.
The doubleheader was the first regular season game at Our Lady of
the Meadows Field.
Pagano allowed three hits with eight strikeouts in her first
home game of her career to pick up her fourth win of the year. The
sophomore went 4-1 last year, but did not pitch in Emmitsburg after
her freshman campaign ended due to an injury.
Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) knocked in the
lone run for the Mount (6-7) in the opener and added a hit and a
run scored in the nightcap. Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn)
went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game while freshman Cat
Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had a nice home debut
with three hits and a run scored.
Jade Dudley did the damage for the Eagles (4-7) with a three-run
homer in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Stacy Burgos added
four hits and two runs scored. Paige Arnold was the hard-luck loser
of the opener after allowing one run on five hits with nine
strikeouts. Arnold allowed one hit with a strikeout to earn the
save in the second game.
The opener was an old fashion pitcher's duel with Mount St.
Mary's getting a run in the fifth inning and holding on for a 1-0
victory.
Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) walked with one out and
moved to second on an Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's
Ryken) bunt before Zingle ripped a base hit to left to bring home
Beebe with the game's only run.
Coppin State had a couple of chances in the game to score, but
could not convert. Burgos singled to start the second, moved to
second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt, but a pair
of strikeouts got Pagano out of the jam. In the sixth, Heather
Josker reached on an infield single and Charma Robinson walked
before two foul outs and a line out ended the threat.
It was the Mountaineers first 1-0 victory since downing Long
Island 1-0 in the first game of a twinbill on Apr. 5, 2009.
The Eagles rallied from a two-run deficit in the nightcap to
take a 4-3 victory to end an 11-game losing streak against Mount
St. Mary's.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Burgos singled through the left
side and Amber Miller reached on an infield single before Dudley
belted a three-run homer to center field to give Coppin State a 4-3
advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, Everist doubled down the right
field line with two outs against Arnold. Ayssa Silipino (Hammonton,
N.J./Hammonton) coaxed a full count walk, but on the fourth ball
pinch runner Courtney Mason (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) was
thrown out at third trying to steal to end the game.
The Mount jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the game. Beebe
started the rally with a walk and Zingle hit a single and moved to
second on a throw to put two runners in scoring position. Everist
then singled up the middle to bring in both runners.
Coppin State answered with a run in the second when Burgos
reached on an infield single and came around to score on a wild
pitch to trim the margin to 2-1.
Mount St. Mary's added a run in the fourth. Clifford walked and
Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding singled before
Clifford touched home on a Beebe RBI single to right for a 3-1
lead. Dudley then hit a three-run shot in the seventh to give the
Eagles the victory.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss for
the Mount.
Zingle moved into eighth place in program history for career
hits (125) and sixth in games played (157). Reeder moved into ninth
place for at-bats (439) and Beebe jumped into the Top-10 and into
ninth place for bases on balls (40). Sadowl moved into 10th place
for career innings pitched (274.0).
The doubleheader was the first regular season game at Our Lady
of the Meadows Field. The field was upgraded with a new scoreboard,
press box and grandstand along with improvements to playing
surface.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at the Demarini
Capital Classic. The Mount will face North Carolina Central (2
p.m.) and Delaware State (4 p.m.) in the first day of a two-day
tournament.
