JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Delaware State defeated Mount St. Mary's
11-1 in five innings in non-conference softball action of the North
Florida Invitational on Sunday.
Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded a hit
and a run scored for the Mount (5-6) while Chloe Mizianty
(Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) knocked in Zimmerman for the squad's
lone run in the second inning.
Jordan Reid fueled the Hornets (7-8) with a 2-for-2 performance
with three RBIs and three runs scored. Ashlyn Campbell allowed one
run on two hits with nine strikeouts and Tawny Reeger added two
hits, two RBIs and a run scored in the winning effort.
Delaware State scored the first five runs of the game and never
looked back to earn an 11-1 victory in the Mountaineers final game
down south.
Reeger got the scoring started in the first with a two-run
double before Rachel Carroll doubled to bring in another run for a
3-0 lead after the first inning. Reid hit a sacrifice fly in the
second and Campbell scored on an error to give the Hornets a 5-0
lead in the second.
Mount St. Mary's posted a run in the bottom of the second.
Zimmerman started the stanza with a single up the middle. After
Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) was hit by the pitch and
Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) walked to load
the bases, Mizianty brought home Zimmerman home with a rare bases
loaded catcher's interference with one out. Campbell got of the
bases loaded jam with a fielder's choice out at the plate and a
strikeout.
Delaware State added four runs in the third thanks to a two-run
triple by Reid, an RBI double by Chelsea Stern and a Janelle Lukens
RBI single to grab a 9-1 lead. Ashley Davis and Casey Beighley
added RBIs in the fifth to seal the win.
Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) started the game for the
Mount and took the loss.
Zingle moved into sixth place on the program's all-time career
chart for at-bats (454).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday for the squad's
first official game at Our Lady of the Meadows Field against Coppin
State. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
