JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) hit a sacrifice fly to cap a five-run sixth and
help Mount St. Mary's rally past Alabama State 7-6 in
non-conference softball action at the North Florida Tournament on
Saturday.
Trailing 6-2 going into the seventh inning, the Mount (5-5)
scored five times to overcome the deficit and go on for the its
first win in the three-day tournament. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) started the inning with a double and moved
to third on a wild pitch. After Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad,
Calif./Carlsbad) singled on a bunt and Taylor Beebe (Olympia,
Wash./Capital) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases,
Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Courtney Zingle
(Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each followed with singles up the
middle to plate Reeder and Mizianty to trim the score to 6-4. Beebe
and Leddy crossed the plate on passed balls to knot the game at 6
before Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Zingle
with the decisive run.
Reeder paced the Mountaineers with two hits, an RBI and a run
scored while Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added two hits
and a runs scored. Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) tossed
three shutout innings in relief with one hit and two strikeouts to
pick up the victory after Amanda Sadowl (Horsham,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started the contest and pitched the first four
innings.
Ayeshia Famble paced the Hornets (3-14) with a 3-for-4
performance with three RBIs and a run scored while Mercedes Frazier
added two hits and a run scored in the loss.
Alabama State scored six of the first seven runs of the game
before Mount St. Mary's rolled off the final six runs to take the
7-6 decision.
The Hornets scored four times in the top of the first inning
thanks to a Famble RBI a triple, a Frazier two-run single to left
field and a Megan Surovik fielder's choice to grab a 4-0
advantage.
The Mount answered in the third with a run. Everist reached on a
fielder's choice and touched home Zimmerman's opposite field RBI
triple to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Alabama State posted two runs in the next inning to take a 6-1
lead after Famble singled in two runs with a single up the
middle.
Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) started the Mount comeback
when she scored in the fifth. The sophomore was hit with a pitch to
open the stanza, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a
wild pitch before Reeder brought Tuck home with a run scoring
double to left field. Mount St. Mary's then scored five times in
the sixth to complete the comeback and Pagano got the Hornets out
1-2-3 in the seventh to secure the victory.
Zingle moved into fifth place for a career runs scored (72) and
seventh career games played (154) while Reeder moved into 10th
place for career at-bats (434)
Mount St. Mary's battles Delaware State in the final day of the
North Florida Invitational on Sunday. Game time is 9 a.m.
