Box Score 2 STATESBORO, Ga. - Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Mount St. Mary's past Georgia Southern 4-2 in non-conference softball action on Thursday. The Eagles took the nightcap, 10-1.
Zingle was hit by a pitch in the fifth to break a 1-all tie to give the Mount (4-3) the lead for good and then smacked her first home run of the year in the seventh. It was the senior's eighth career home run. Zingle added a hit in the second game.
Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) posted four hits and two runs scored in the two games while Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) allowed two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts for her second win of the season in a complete-game effort in the opener.
Shelby Morill paced Georgia Southern (8-14) with three hits and three RBIs while Jorie Walker tallied two hits and three runs scored in the two games.
In the opener, Mount St. Mary's broke a 1-all tie with two runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 4-2 victory.
Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got the fifth inning started with her first base hit of the season through the left side. Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) reached when she was hit by the pitch and Beebe loaded the bases when she reached on a fielder's choice. After a fielder's choice force out at the plate, Zingle was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to plate Mizianty with the go-ahead run. Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was hit with a pitch with two out to bring home Beebe to hand the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.
Morrill trimmed the margin to a run with an RBI single in the sixth, but Zingle nailed a homer in the seventh to restore a two-run lead and seal the victory.
Mount St. Mary's scored a run in the top of the first before Georgia Southern registered the final 10 runs to split the doubleheader with a 10-1 decision.
Beebe helped get the Mount offense started in the first with a double to left center and moved to third on a passed ball. After Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) walked and Zingle reached on an infielder single, Bre Lohman (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) notched her first collegiate RBI when she coaxed a bases loaded walk to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles came back in the bottom half of the inning to score seven runs and take a 7-1 advantage. Megen Smith cleared the bases with a three-run double, Bethany Crenshaw plated two runs with a double before Morrill capped the inning with an RBI single while another run came across the plate on an error on Morrill's base hit.
Georgia Southern added two runs in the second on a Tabby Douberley RBI double and a Alexa Lewis RBI twobagger before Andrea Tarashuk plated a run in the third on a sacrifice fly for a 10-1 lead.
Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) took the loss for the Mountaineers in the second game.
Zingle moved into sixth place for career runs scored (71), eighth in RBIs (63), eighth for games played (151) and seventh in at bats (444). Beebe moved into sixth place for career doubles (23).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at the North Florida Tournament on Friday. The Mount will face Kansas at 4:30 p.m. and the host Ospreys at 7 p.m.
