Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - Long Island scored 12 of the final 20 points
to down Mount St. Mary's 65-61 in Northeast Conference (NEC)
women's basketball action on Monday.
Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) paced the Mount
(8-19, 5-11 NEC) with 22 points and nine rebounds while Sandra
Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) added 15 points in the
loss.
After Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) tied
the game at 53 on a jumper at 6:41, the Blackbirds (19-8, 11-5 NEC)
scored the next eight points to take the lead for good. Kiara Evans
started the decisive run with a layup at 5:38 before Justine
Stevenson scored in the lane at 5:13 for a 57-53 lead. Stevenson
then hit a jumper at 4:42 and Chelsi Johnson scored in the lane off
a Stevenson assist at 3:59 for a 61-53 lead. The Mountaineers
cut it to six points twice before scoring the final four points to
set the final score.
Ashley Palmer paced Long Island with 17 points while Evans and
Stevenson each added 13 points. It was a new career-high for
Stevenson.
In the sixth close battle between the two teams in the last
seven meetings, Long Island finally grabbed the lead from the pesky
Mount St. Mary's squad late in the second half and held on for the
win.
The game started as a seesaw battle with the Mount grabbing the
advantage on seven occasions. Dunn gave the Mountaineers their
final lead on a 3-pointer at 4:19 for a 25-24 edge. Mount St.
Mary's did not hold more than a two-point margin on the
night. With the score tied at 32, Palmer gave the Blackbirds
a 34-32 lead going into the locker room in the closing seconds of
the first half.
Long Island then scored the first eight points of the second
half to grab a 42-32 advantage with 16:54 left. Johnson had four of
the eight points in the run.
Mount St. Mary's then used a 21-11 run to even the game at 53
with 6:41 on the clock. The Mount also tied it at 48 at the 8:58
mark. Dunn paced the squad with six points while Selina Mann
(Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) chipped in five points in the spurt.
The Blackbirds then took the lead for good on an Evans driving
layup and they went on for their four-straight win against the
Mountaineers.
Dunn made a career-high four 3-pointers on the night. The senior
moved into fourth place in program history for games played with
115. It was also her fourth 20-point performance of the season and
the sixth of her career.
The game marked the final home game for Dunn and fellow seniors
Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) and
Kristin Scheitrum (Macingie, Pa./Emmaus). Westbrooks added three
points, seven rebounds and three assists in her final game in
Emmitsburg while Scheitrum did not dress. Scheitrum played in the
Mount St. Mary's 66-49 win against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday
for the first time since Dec. 21, 2008 and scored a basket in the
closing minute.
With the loss coupled with Fairleigh Dickinson's 79-76 win
against Robert Morris, the Mount needs to win its final two games
and the Knights have to fall in its last two contests in order for
the Mountaineers to advance to its 21st NEC Tournament in 22
seasons.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Robert Morris.
