Women's Basketball Concludes Home Slate Against Long Island On Monday

opening tip... Monday's game between Mount St. Mary's and Long Island marks the 42nd meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1989-90 season.
• The Mountaineers lead the series 26-15, but the Blackbirds have won 15 of the last 18 meetings including three-straight in the series. Long Island downed the Mount 63-60 in Brooklyn on Jan. 17.
• Five of the last six meetings have been decided by three points or less.
• The road team has won three of the last five games in the series.
• The last Mount St. Mary's victory was a 65-63 win on Feb. 9, 2009 at the Wellness Center.

about the blackbirds... Long Island comes into the contest 18-8 overall and 10-5 in Northeast Conference action after defeating Wagner 61-57 on Saturday. The Blackbirds are in a four-way tie for second place in the league standings.
• Junior F Ashley Palmer paced Long Island with 19 points against the Seahawks. Palmer has been the squad's leading scorer in five-straight games to help the Blackbirds to a six-game winning streak. During this stretch, the junior scored 24 points in a 70-58 win against Quinnipiac on Feb. 5 and 28 points in a 70-58 victory against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Feb. 12. Palmer leads the team with 15.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
• Junior G Kiara Evans added 14 points on Saturday. The junior scored 21 points in a 68-49 win against Fairleigh Dickinson on Jan. 31. Evans ranks second on the squad with 10.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
• Senior F Chelsi Johnson added 11 points in the win against Wagner. The senior posted 12 points in a 77-59 win against Sacred Heart on Feb. 7. Johnson is third on the team with 10.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

last time we met... Long Island held on after a furious Mount St. Mary's comeback attempt for a 63-60 win on Jan. 17, 2011. Jessie Kaufman paced the Mount with a career-high 14 points while Mary Dunn (13 points), Kayla Grossett (11 points) and Selina Mann (10 points) also reached double figures. Ashley Palmer fueled the Blackbirds with 20 points while Chelsi Johnson added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

last time out... Freshman Ashley Christie and junior Sandra Andresson combined for 29 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past St. Francis (N.Y.) 66-49 on Saturday.

quick hits on the st. francis (n.y.) game... For the second-straight game the Mount did not trail in a game. The Mount jumped out to a 5-0 lead and the Terriers rallied to tie the game at 5, but then the Mountaineers took the lead for good.
• Fellow freshman Ashley Christie has posted double figures for three-straight games for the first time in her career and led the Mountaineers with 15 points along with six assists. Christie is averaging 13.0 points per game in her last three games. The freshman ranks second on the team with 13 double-digit performances and Mount St. Mary's is 4-2 when Christie is the team's leading scorer.
• Junior Sandra Andresson added 14 points in the win against St. Francis (N.Y.). The junior is averaging 13.8 points per game in her last four games at Knott Arena to help the squad to a 4-0 mark in that span.
• Senior Mary Dunn missed double figures for the third time in 15 league games including twice against the Terriers, but the senior finished the game with eight points and 10 rebounds. Dunn moved into 18th place in program history with 1,134 career points. She jumped into seventh place in program history with 114 games played and will jump into fourth place with her next appearance. The senior ranks sixth in league games with 13.1 points per game.
• Sophomore Selina Mann posted seven steals, five assists and four points against the Terriers. Mann has dished out 117 assists this season, the most since Amy Langville handed out 139 in 1996-97. The sophomore also has the most steals since Kiana Fobbs registered 110 steals in 2001-02 with 81 in 2010-11.
• Senior Kristin Scheitrum suited up for the first time since her sophomore year and got into the game during the closing minutes. The senior scored a basket on a layup for her first points since scoring against Virginia on Dec. 21, 2008. Scheitrum, Dunn and fellow senior Leah Westbrooks were honored prior to the start of the game on Saturday.
• Freshman Jessie Kauffman added eight points off the bench. The freshman posted 13 points against Wagner on Feb. 14 and is averaging 10.5 points per game in her last two games.
• The Mount has won four of its last five for the first time this season and for the second time under head coach Bryan Whitten.
• The squad has won four straight at home for the first time since 2007-08 when that team won five straight to end the regular season.

the state of the mount... With three games left, the Mount remains in play for the final playoff spot in the Northeast Conference.
• The Mount's standing did not change much after the squad's 66-49 win against St. Francis (N.Y.) since Fairleigh Dickinson shocked league leader Saint Francis (Pa.) 62-58 on Saturday. With that win, the Knights remained one game ahead of the Mount.
• The Mountaineers need to win one more game than Fairleigh Dickinson in the final three games in order to clinch its 21st tournament appearance in 22 years.
• It will be no easy task for the Mount as they host Long Island on Monday before closing out the season at Robert Morris on Feb. 26 and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 28. The Blackbirds and Colonials are in a four-way tie for second place while the Red Flash holds the top spot with a two-game advantage.
• The Knights do not have it much easier, hosting Robert Morris on Monday and then travel to Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart in the final weekend. The Bobcats are in sixth place and the Pioneers are a part of that four-way tie for fourth.
• Wagner could also have a say in the final playoff spot, but would have to go 3-0 in its final three games. The Staten Island program currently sits one game behind the Mount and two games behind FDU.
• Mount St. Mary's holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Knights and also have the advantage in a three-way tiebreaker with the Seahawks and Fairleigh Dickinson.
• Seven of the eight spots have been clinched with the Mount, Wagner and the Knights vying for the final spot. St. Francis (N.Y.) has been eliminated from playoff contention and Bryant is not eligible for postseason play for another two years.

i'm a weekend kind of girl... Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 12.6 points per game on the weekend this season.
• The freshman has posted double figures in her last six Saturday games and is averaging 17.0 points per game in that stretch.
• Christie is averaging 16.7 points per game in five Saturday league games.
• The freshman has posted eight of her 13 double-digit performances on the weekend. Those eight games also represent her Top-8 performances this season.

next on tap... Mount St. Mary's ends the regular season with two games in Western Pennsylvania against Robert Morris (Feb. 26) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (Feb. 28).

out of africa... Senior Leah Westbrooks has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Shooting Touch, Inc. for a 10-month Sabbatical Program.
• Westbrooks will be working in South Africa and Western Zimbabwe during her 10-months.

a different kind of year in 2010-11... In head coach Bryan Whitten's first three years success came from its defense.
• This season has been a different story as the Mount has allowed 60 points in 17 of its 26 games and the opponent is averaging 65.2 points per game.
• Last season, the Mount allowed 60 points or more 11 times. The Mountaineers also ranked second in scoring defense (58.7 ppg.) in the Northeast Conference and 37th in Division I.
• Offensively, Mount St. Mary's has scored 60 points 11 times this season, including four 70-point performances and one 80-point game. The Mount is 4-1 when it scores 70 points, but just 6-5 when reaching 60 points this season.
• The squad has scored over 60 points eight times in its last 16 games, including all five contests over 70 points.
• Last season, Mount St. Mary's reached 60 points only five times and over 63 points only three times.
• Under Whitten, the Mount is 23-16 when it scores 60 points in a game in his four seasons.

in the last five... The Mount is 4-1 in its last five games and is averaging 62.6 points per game.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 12.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in her last five games. Christie has four double-digit games in her last five, including a career-high 21 points against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 5.
• Junior Sandra Andresson is averaging 12.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in that stretch. The junior has two 10-point games, including a career-best 25 points against Monmouth on Feb. 7.
• Senior Mary Dunn is almost averaging double figures at 9.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in that span. Dunn has three double-figure contests in that stretch, including 16 points against the Knights.

at the knott... Mount St. Mary's is 5-7 at home this season and is averaging 55.8 points per game at Knott Arena. The Mount has won four straight in Emmitsburg.
• Senior Mary Dunn is averaging 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game at Knott Arena. The senior has scored double figures eight times at home, including six of the last seven games at Knott Arena. Dunn has posted her only two double-doubles of the year in Emmitsburg. Dunn is averaging 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in her last eight home games.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 10.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. The freshman notched a career-high 21 points against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 5 and has registered five 10-point games in her last seven home contests.
• Sophomore Selina Mann, junior Sandra Andressonand freshman Kayla Grossett each have three 10-point games at home while senior Leah Westbrooks, sophomore Tara Lonergan, freshman Kelly Guerriero and freshman Jessie Kaufman each have one double-digit home performance this season.

stat stuffer... Sophomore Selina Mann has done it all on the court this season whether its scoring, rebounding, assisting or thievery.
• Mann has scored double figures in 10 games this season, all in the last 18 games. The sophomore notched a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29 and scored the game-winning basket against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• The sophomore has grabbed at least five rebounds six times this season, including a season-high eight caroms at Central Connecticut State on Jan. 31. The 5-4 guard has also recorded 10-board game on her career resume.
• Mann has dished out four assists 19 times this season, including a career-high eight helpers against the Dons and seven dimes at Navy on Dec. 8, at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15 and at Bryant on Jan. 29. She ranks second in the league with 4.38 assists per game.
• The sophomore has recorded two steals in 22 of the 26 games and four steals eight times, including a program-record 10 thefts against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24. Mann currently leads the conference with 2.88 steals per game.

queen of thievery... Sophomore Selina Mann tied the single-game program record for steals in a game with 10 against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24.
• The sophomore became the third player in program history and the second player in Mount Division I history to record 10 steals in a game. She joins Karla Green (at Richmond, Feb. 20, 1983) and Kim Rhock (St. Francis (N.Y.), Feb. 13, 1990) as the only players in program history to reach double-digit thefts.
• Mann becomes the second player to record a double-double with points and steals, although Rhock finished her game against the Terriers with a triple-double (19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals).

wins vs. losses... Mount St. Mary's is averaging 69.2 points per game in its seven wins compared to 52.2 points per game in the 18 loses. The squad is 5-5 when it reaches 60 points.
• The Mountaineers are shooting 41.8 percent when it wins, but just 33.4 percent in a loss.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in every game except Quinnipiac (Jan. 4), St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15), Monmouth (Feb. 7), Wagner (Feb. 12) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (Feb. 19), but are only -1.5 on boards in wins and -10.1 in losses.
• Mount St. Mary's is 6-1 when it leads at halftime and 2-16 when the opponents hold the edge and 0-1 when the game is tied at the break.

board issues... Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 20 of its 26 games this season. All six games have come in league play and in the last 14 games. The opponents have held a 10-rebound edge in 10 games this season, but the Mount has been trailed by 10 rebounds or less in 12 games, including 10 of the last 17 games.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 75 games under head coach Bryan Whitten, including 34 games with double-digit rebound deficits. The squad is 3-31 when the opponent holds a 10-board advantage.
• Last season, the Mount won the rebound battle in 50 percent of its games and had seven games when the opponent had a 10-carom margin.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 246 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (262) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (268).
• The Mount is 246-140 in Northeast Conference play, including 139-58 at Knott Arena and 107-82 on the road.

that was a career day... Junior Sandra Andresson posted a career-high 25 points against Monmouth on Feb. 7.
• Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 21 points against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 5.
• Freshman Kelly Guerriero had a career-best 13 points against Bryant on Jan. 29.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman recorded a career-high 14 points against Long Island on Jan. 17.
• Fellow freshman Kayla Grossett also had a career day against the Terriers with 16 points.
• Senior Mary Dunn notched a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• Sophomore Selina Mann scored a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29. Fellow sophomore Tara Lonergan also established a career-best against the Spartans with 13 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.

a new year, a new start... In February, the Mount is 215-103 and 117-66 since switching to Division I.
• The Mountaineers are 72-25 at home and 42-41 on the road since switching to Division I.
• Once the New Year hits, the Mount has posted a 473-223 overall mark and a 272-152 since turning Division I in the last three months of the season.
• The Mount is 13-15 under head coach Bryan Whitten in the month.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 18 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• The Mount has used four different starting lineups this season.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 114-straight games in her career to establish the all-time start record at the Mount.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has started 74 of her 91 games played, including starts in the last three games.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 72 of the 83 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight games she has played.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has started the first 26 games of her collegiate career.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman started the first nine games of the season before fellow freshman Kayla Grossett started games against Sacred Heart and San Jose State before sophomore Tara Lonergan made her first career start against San Francisco and has started 10 of the last 15 games.

three-pointer to start scoring is deadly for the mount... Mount St. Mary's registered a 3-pointer for its first field goal of the game 11 times this season. The Mount is 3-8 in those games and has won its last two games it hit a trey to start a game.
• The squad has hit a trey to start its scoring against Virginia (Nov. 14), Cincinnati (Nov. 23), Towson (Dec. 1), Pittsburgh (Dec. 4), Navy (Dec. 8), Loyola (Dec. 11), Quinnipiac (Jan. 4), Saint Francis (Pa.) (Jan. 10), St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15), Monmouth (Feb. 7), St. Francis (N.Y.) (Feb. 19).
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman has hit the squad's opening 3-pointer in four times while senior Mary Dunn and junior Sandra Andresson has three opening treys and freshman Ashley Christie has one.
• The Mountaineers are 5-9 when its first field goal comes from inside the arc.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• After establishing a new career-high on her bucket with 12:01 left in the second half, the sophomore left the game with a knee injury.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 23-16 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 16-54 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 30-24 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 9-50 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 31-14 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-3 when the game is tied, but just 7-57 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 18-16 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 20-54 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 30-24 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn, junior Sandra Andresson, sophomore Selina Mann and freshman Ashley Christie are the only four players on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in their career. All six 20-point performances have come in the last 13 games.
• Dunn posted a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31, had 21 points against Robert Morris on Jan. 8 and scored 20 points against Bryant on Jan. 29. The senior also accomplished the feat twice last season when she recorded 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• Mann became the first player this season to turn the trick when she posted a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29, 2010.
• Christie became the third player this season to reach 20 points after coming up short by one or two points twice this season. The freshman posted a career-high 21 points against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 5.
• Andresson joined the 20-point club with a career-high 25 points against Monmouth on Feb. 7.
• The Mount has registered 22 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 13-9 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest.

notes on dunn's 1,000 point game... Senior Mary Dunn became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 points with her layup at 17:05 in the second half against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Dunn is the first player to reach the milestone since current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier joined the club against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 7, 2009.
• Dunn is the 15th player to reach 1,000 points at home. The Mount is 11-3 in those games.
• The senior is the third 1,000-point scorer head coach Bryan Whitten has coached at the Mount, joining Gauthier and Tiffany Green (2007-08).
• Dunn is the eighth player in program history to have 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 18th place in program history with 1,134 career points. Next on the list is Karla Green (1,179, 1980-84).
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn moved into fifth place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 818 caroms after grabbing seven boards against Wagner on Feb. 12. The senior can move into fourth place and ahead of Green (844, 1980-84) with 26 rebounds.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 15 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with two double-doubles.
• The senior became the program's all-time career leader in starts against Monmouth on Feb. 7 and now stands at 114.
• Dunn also cracked the Top-10 for games played with 114 and will move into fourth place with her next appearance.

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 567 career points to rank 48th in program history and can move into 47th place with 21 points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 55th place in program history with 501 points and can move into 54th place with two points, 53rd place with four points, 52nd place with 10 points, 51st place with 12 point and 22 points for 50th place.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move into 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 311 points for her career to rank 68th in team history and can move into 67th place with four points and 66th place with 20 points.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has 258 points in her first season to rank 74th in program history. The freshman can move into 73rd place with 17 points.
• Sophomore Tara Lonergan became the seventh player on the team to join the Top-100 in scoring and stands at 154 career points. The sophomore can move into 90th place with two points and 89th place with 19 points.
• Freshman Kayla Grossett has 135 points for her career and can be the eighth member of the 2010-11 team in the Top-100 with five points.

1,000 games in program history... Mount St. Mary's played its 1,000th game in program history on Jan. 8 against Robert Morris.
• The Mount is 637-375 in program history.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could have arguably been the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 74-115 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 208-102 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 139-59 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 40-74 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 19-34 overall at Knott Arena and 14-22 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with a 21-40 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 11-20 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).
