EMMITSBURG, Md. - Freshmen Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) combined for 25 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Wagner 59-41 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday. With the win, the Mount split the season series against the Seahawks in a series tabbed as the North-South Showdown during the NEC's Rivalry Week.

Kaufman posted 13 points after going 4-for-8 from the floor, 3 of 5 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Christie picked up the majority of her points at the foul line, going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe and finished the game with 12 points. Christie also had three assists and two steals while Kaufman posted four rebounds, two blocks and two steals to go along with her 13 points.

Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) tallied 10 points and six rebounds for the Mount (7-18, 4-10 NEC) while Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) stuffed the stat sheet with seven assists, five points and five steals despite being hampered with foul trouble.

Megan Mahoney paced the Seahaks (11-14, 4-10 NEC) with 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

In a game that almost mirrored the tilt between the two teams in Staten Island on Saturday, the home team took the advantage and never looked back to earn the win. Mount St. Mary's ended a three-game losing streak against Wagner with its victory on Monday.

After a 30 minute delay due to a power outage on campus, the Mount jumped out to a 21-11 advantage in the first 14 minutes of the game. Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) started the scoring with a driving layup at 19:43 before Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) scored in the paint at 19:02 for a 4-0 advantage.

After Kelly Clark answered for the Seahawks at 18:43 to trim the margin to 4-2, the Mountaineers scored the next six points off 3-pointers by Mann at 17:54 and Dunn at 16:42. Veronick Fournier cut the deficit to 10-4 on two free throws at 14:18, but Kaufman drilled a 3-pointer at 13:28 and Mann made two free throws at 11:24 to give Mount St. Mary's a 15-6 margin.

Wagner was able to cut the margin to 17-11 after a Mahoney 3-ball at 9:34 only to see Christie and Andresson each hit 1 of 2 at the free throw line and Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) hit a jumper at 6:12 for a 21-11 lead.

Fournier and Clark recorded back-to-back baskets to trim the margin to 21-15 with 4:36 left, but Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) drained two free throws and then the freshman scored in the lane at 3:29 for a 25-15 lead. Lonergan then gave the Mountaineers a 12-point lead on a layup with 59 seconds left and Stephanie McBride responded with two free throws to cut the deficit to 27-17 going into the locker room.

McBride then hit two free throws to start the second half and trim the margin to single digits, but Mount St. Mary's rolled off 11 of the next 13 points to take a 38-21 advantage with 13:56 on the clock.

Christie started the spurt with a traditional 3-point play at 18:42 before Dunn nailed a jumper at 18:01 for a 32-19 lead. After Mahoney answered with a jumper at 17:47, the Mount scored the next six points on treys by Dunn at 15:20 and Kaufman at 13:56 for a 17-point lead.

The Seahawks cut the deficit to 11 points with 3:46 left, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Westbrooks hauled in nine rebounds for the Mount. Dunn moved into eighth place in program history for career games played with 113.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against St. Francis (N.Y.). Game time is 3 p.m. Fans who wear pink and give a $2 donation with be admitted to the game for free as part of the Mount's Pink Zone Game to support breast cancer. All money raised will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free mini "Pink Zone" basketball. In addition, the Mount will honor seniors Dunn, Westbrooks and Kristin Scheitrum (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) prior to the start of the contest.
