Central Connecticut State Topples Women's Basketball, 57-49

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Central Connecticut State defeated Mount St. Mary's 57-49 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) paced the Mount (4-17, 1-9 NEC) with 19 points and six rebounds. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks.

Alexzandria Dowdy fueled the Blue Devils (13-7, 6-4 NEC) with a career-high 18 points. Jessica Babe added 10 points and Justina Udenze chipped in nine points in the winning effort.

Central Connecticut State rallied from a nine-point first half deficit and a six-point disadvantage in the second half to come from behind to earn the victory and improve to 8-1 at Detrick Gymnasium.

After Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) gave Mount St. Mary's its final lead at 45-43 on a 3-pointer at the 5:57 mark, the Blue Devils closed the game on a 14-4 run to earn the 57-49 win.

Babe handed Central Connecticut State the lead it would not relinquish on a 3-pointer at 4:34 before she converted her own steal into a basket in the paint at 4:05 for a 48-45 advantage. Dunn answered with two free throws at 3:39 to cut the margin to 48-47, but the Blue Devils scored the next eight points to seal the victory.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead with 13:59 left in the first half and held the advantage up until Jaleen Thomas nailed a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to send the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 24.

With the score tied at 2, the Mount scored 10 of the next 12 points to grab a 12-4 advantage. Mann started the run with a traditional 3-point play at 13:59 before Udenze answered for the Blue Devils at 13:47 with a jumper to trim the margin to 5-4.

Dunn answered with a 3-pointer at 13:24 and Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) nailed a jumper at 12:29 for a 10-4 lead. Dunn extended the lead to eight points on two free throws at 10:44. Central Connecticut State trimmed the margin to six points before Mann drained a trey at 7:39 to give the Mountaineers its largest lead at 19-10.

The Blue Devils then closed the first half on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 24 at the break. Dowdy had five points and Udenze added four points in the final seven minutes and 15 seconds to spark the spurt.

In the second half with the score tied at 30, the Mountaineers scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 38-32 lead with 11:46 on the clock. Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) started the spurt with two free throws at 15:01 and 1 of 2 at the charity stripe at 13:59 for a 33-30 edge.

Udenze momentarily halted the run with a basket in the paint to trim the margin to 33-32 with 13:07 left before Mathews converted a traditional 3-point play to finish her streak of six-straight points for Mount St. Mary's at 12:44. Dunn then put the Mount up six points at 38-32 on two free throws at 11:46.

Crockett responded for the Blue Devils with back-to-back 3-pointers at 11:19 and 10:12 to give Central Connecticut State a 39-38 lead. After the host extended the lead to 43-40 with 6:51 remaining, the Mount scored five-straight points thanks to two charity tosses by Mann at 6:39 and Christie's triple at 5:57 to give the Mountaineers a 45-43 lead. The Blue Devils then closed the game on a 14-4 run to go on for the win.

Dunn, who has recorded double figures in nine of the 10 league games this season, moved into 21st place in program history with 1,085 points. The senior also moved into third place in program history with 109 starts.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is 3 p.m.
