Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – Rider defeated Mount St. Mary's 53-44 in non-conference women's basketball action on Thursday.
Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) paced the Mount (5-6) with 12 points. Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds while Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estionia/Audentes School) chipped in eight points in the loss.
Sironda Chambers fueled the Broncs (8-3) with 15 points and Alyssa Parsons added nine points in the winning effort.
Rider took the lead midway through the first half and pulled away in the second half to hand Mount St. Mary's its first home loss of the season. The Mount won its first four home games for the first time since 1997-98 coming into the contest.
After Kaufman tied the game at 11 with a 3-pointer at 10:24, the Broncs scored five unanswered points to take the lead for good. Chambers hit a jumper at 10:07 and Parson nailed a trey 62 seconds later to give Rider a 16-11 lead. Mount St. Mary's trimmed the margin to two points twice in the final nine minutes of the stanza, but Rider went into the locker room with a 23-19 lead.
Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) scored a jumper to start the scoring in the second half at 19:28 and then traded a basket with Chambers to cut the deficit to 25-23 with 18:22 remaining. The Broncs then went on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to double figures at 35-25 with 12:27 left.
The Mountaineers then scored nine of the next 13 points to make it a five-point game after Jen Carney (Drexel Hills, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) drained two free throws with 8:41 left. Fazzini answered with a 3-pointer at 6:38 for a 42-34 lead.
Rider restored a double-digit margin with 1:47 left before the Mountaineers scored the next six points to trim the score to 49-44 after a Henderson 3-pointer with 57 seconds left, but Chambers and Parsons each hit a pair at the free throw line to seal the victory. It was the Broncs' first win in Emmitsburg in 14 tries.
Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) posted five steals and four assists while Mathews finished the night with six points and six rebounds and Carney notched a career-best six points.
The game marked the return on John Miller, a 2006 graduate of the Mount and former women's basketball assistant coach. Miller is in his fifth season as an assistant coach at Rider.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against Bucknell. Game time is 1 p.m.
