West Virginia Downs Women's Basketball

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia defeated Mount St. Mary's 94-32 in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) paced the Mount (5-5) with 10 points while Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) added nine points in the loss.

Taylor Palmer fueled West Virginia with 21 points. Christal Caldwell (15 points), Asya Bussie (13 points), Linda Stepney (10 points) and Jessica Harlee (10 points) also found double figures in the winning effort.

West Virginia scored the first 11 points of the night and never looked back for its fourth-straight win against Mount St. Mary's. The loss ended the Mount's three-game winning streak.

West Virginia scored the first 11 points in the first three minutes and 12 seconds of the game. Stepney got the scoring started with a layup 48 seconds into the contest before Bussie scored in the lane at 18:38 and Stepney posted her second basket of the night at 17:37. Taylor and Bussie then both hit 1 of 2 at the foul line before Caldwell converted a tradition 3-point play at 16:48 for an 11-0 lead.

The Mount registered back-to-back buckets from Christie and Kaufman to trim the margin to 11-4 with 15:36 remaining in the first half. West Virginia continued its offensive surge by scoring 38 of the final 53 points of the stanza to go into the locker room with a 49-19 lead. Christie posted seven of Mount St. Mary's 19 points in the half.

The second half was a mirror of the first half as West Virginia went on for the victory.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action when the squad opens a three-game homestand against Rider on Dec. 29. Game time is 7 p.m.
