Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – Sophomore Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) keyed a 16-6 run in the opening eight minutes with nine points to help Mount St. Mary's to a 52-45 win against Navy in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday. Christie finished the game with a season-high 16 points.
Christie scored nine points in a span of three minutes and 24 seconds to extend the Mount's (2-3) lead from 5-4 to 14-6. The sophomore then assisted Sydney Henderson's (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and then hit a jumper to have a hand in 13-straight points for the Mountaineers.
Christie notched her second double-digit performance of the season after connecting on 6 of 9 shots from the field, 2 of 3 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. She also added three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Fellow sophomore Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) registered her third double-digit performance of the season with 12 points while Henderson stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in the winning effort.
Kara Pollinger paced the Midshipmen (1-3) with 16 points in the loss.
After playing its first four games on the road, Mount St. Mary's made its triumphant home debut. The Mount wasted little time to use its home-court advantage, starting the first eight minutes of the game on a 16-6 run and never looked back to improve to 18-8 overall and 9-1 at home against Navy.
Alix Membreno gave the Midshipmen the early lead on a layup at 18:57, but Henderson got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer at 17:35. Jade Geif gave Navy the lead for the final time at 5-4 on a jumper at 17:11.
Mount St. Mary's then scored 13 of the next 15 points to take the lead for good. Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) started the surge with a pair of free throws at 16:50 before Christie nailed a trey at 16:04 and a two free throws at 14:47 for a 10-4 edge.
Geif momentarily halted the Mount's run with a jumper at 13:58, but consecutive layups by Christie at 13:00 and 12:40 gave the Mount a 14-6 lead. Christie helped end the run with an assist on a Henderson basket in the paint at 12:15 to give the Mountaineers its first double-digit lead of the afternoon.
Navy then scored five of the next seven points to cut it to a seven-point game. Pollinger nailed a 3-pointer at 11:55 and a jumper at 9:48 sandwiched in between a Christie layup at 11:29 to trim the score to 18-11. Henderson nailed a trey at 8:44 to restore a 10-point margin and Mount St. Mary's would maintain a double-figure lead until Audrey Bauer converted two free throws with 22 ticks on the clock to cut the deficit to 29-20 going into the locker room.
The Midshipmen opened the second half scoring five of the first eight points to once again make it a seven-point difference with 17:02 left. Fueled by four points by Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield), the Mountaineers scored the next eight points to open up a 40-25 advantage with 12:28 on the clock.
Navy would again cut the margin to seven points on two more occasions, but could get no closer.
Mathews finished the game with six points and six rebounds while Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) added a season-high six points off the bench.
The Mountaineers are now 25-13 in its first home game of the season, including a 13-12 mark at Knott Arena.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at Pittsburgh. Game time is 7 p.m.
