Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – American defeated Mount St. Mary's 77-62 in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday.
Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced the Mount (1-2) with a career-high 18 points. Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) added 13 points and Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) notched a career-best 10 points.
Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) notched her third career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The junior has posted a double-double in each of her first three seasons with two points-rebounds double-doubles and one points-steals double-double. Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) hauled in a career-high 10 boards in the loss.
Lisa Strack paced the Eagles (2-2) with 24 points. Ti'Aisha McGeorge added 15 points and Tori Halvorsen chipped in 11 points in the winning effort.
American used a big run to end the first half and with the aid of the 3-pointer held on after several Mount St. Mary's comeback attempts to earn the victory.
After the Mountaineers tied the game at 19, American closed the first half on a 15-2 run to take a 34-21 lead going into the locker room.
Geisha George started the run with back-to-back baskets at 3:58. Andresson momentarily halted the surge with a layup at 3:17, but the Eagles scored the final 11 points of the stanza. McGeorge nailed a 3-pointer at 2:55, Sarah Kiely converted two free throws at 2:15 before McGeorge drilled a trey at 1:37 and Strack ended the first-half scoring with a triple with 3.2 ticks left for a 13-point lead at the break.
In the second half, the Mount trimmed the margin to a basket with 13:52 left in the game. Trailing 43-30 with 15:36 on the clock, Mount St. Mary's used a 12-2 run to trim the margin to 45-42.
Henderson keyed the run with three made baskets from behind the arc. The junior started the offensive outburst with a trey at 15:20 before Mann converted a traditional 3-point play at 15:04. Henderson then nailed a triple at 14:24 to make it a four-point game. Halvorsen momentarily stopped Henderson's run with a layup at 14:05, but the junior nailed her third shot from behind the arc to cut the deficit to 45-42 with 13:52 left. Halvorsen then registered back-to-back baskets to restore a seven-point lead with 13:20 left.
The Mountaineers trimmed the deficit to five points after a Christie layup at 10:04, but McGeorge nailed a 3-ball four seconds later. Henderson then scored in the paint to make it a five-point contest with 8:07 remaining, but Alexis Dobbs hit a trey 13 second later to start a 7-0 run and to help the Eagles pull away.
American jumped out an 11-5 lead in the game. Trailing 5-3, Strack scored eight-consecutive points in 30 seconds to give the Eagles the edge. With American clinging to a 19-13 advantage with 9:31 remaining in the first half, Mount St. Mary's scored the next six points to knot the score at 19 with 4:36 on the clock. Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) registered consecutive baskets before Henderson scored in the lane in the spurt. The Eagles then scored 15 of the final 17 points to take the lead for good.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at Towson on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m. The game at the Towson will conclude the four-game road trip to start the season and will make its Knott Arena debut on Nov. 26 against Navy.
