PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored a career-high 19 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Maryland-Eastern Shore 63-44 in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Kaufman shot 8-for-14 on the night including 3 of 7 from behind the arc to finish with a career-best 19 points. The sophomore added six rebounds, two steals and a block to help the Mount (1-1) to its first win of the year.

Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) tallied 10 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds while Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) posted nine points and Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) chipped in eight points in the winning effort.

Chelsea Sanders paced the Hawks (0-1) with 13 points while Shanyce Stewart hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds in the squad's season opener.

UMES jumped out to a 7-4 and 10-6 advantage before the Mountaineers went on an 18-3 run to take the lead for good.

Mann started the run with a 3-pointer at 12:20. After Caitlyn Dillard hit the back end of two free throws at 11:54, Kaufman tied the game at 11 on a layup at 11:41 to start a 7-0 run. Mann then converted the traditional 3-point play at 10:34 before Kaufman capped the surge with a layup at 9:57 for a 16-11 lead.

Sanders momentarily halted the offensive outburst with a jumper at 9:08, but Mount St. Mary's scored the next eight points. Andresson scored in the paint at 8:54 before Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Alter) and Andresson each dialed up long distance for a 24-13 advantage with 8:02 left in the first half.

After the Hawks cut the deficit to single digits at 27-19 on a Karona Roach jumper at 1:57, the Mount closed the stanza with three-straight layups to go into the locker room with a 33-19 lead. Christie made a nice drive to the basket for her first points of the season at 1:27 before Rachel Mathews (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and Kaufman registered layups in the final 30 seconds to go into halftime with a 14-point margin.

UMES cut the margin to eight points with 15:49 left in the game after a Sanders jumper, but Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) hit a jumper to start a 16-2 run over the next five minutes to put the game away. The surge was powered by seven points by Kaufman, five points from Henderson and four from Christie.

The Mountaineers grabbed an early 4-0 lead thanks to baskets from Andresson and Mathews. UMES then scored the next seven points and 10 of the next 12 to take a 10-6 lead. Sanders scored back-to-back baskets to start the surge before Amber Cook scored in the lane for a 7-4 edge at 16:53.

After Mathews scored her second layup of the night at 16:07, Sha-Kiyla Finney nailed a jumper at 13:51 and Stewart hit 1 of 2 at the line for a 10-6 lead. Mount St. Mary's then scored 27 of the final 36 points to take the lead at the break.

Mathews posted six points and seven rebounds in her first collegiate start. The Mountaineers go to 1-1 on the season for the fourth time under head coach Bryan Whitten.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at American. Game time is 7 p.m.
