VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton defeated Mount St. Mary's 52-43 in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) paced the Mount (0-1) with a career-high 13 points off the bench. Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) added nine points and five rebounds in the loss.

Viive Rebane led the Bobcats (1-0) with 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals while Orla O'Reilly chipped in 13 points in the winning effort.

Binghamton jumped out to the advantage and held on after several Mount St. Mary's comeback attempts to take the season opener and improve to 2-0 in the series against the Mountaineers.

After the Mount jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) layup at 19:18, the Bearcats scored the next eight points to grab an 8-2 advantage at 15:44 in the first half.

Andrea Holmes started the run by converting two free throws at 18:46 before Rebane, Jasbriell Swain and Holmes each scored in the paint to give Binghamton the six-point lead.

Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) momentarily halted the surge with a layup at 14:27, but the Bearcats rolled off a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 18-4. O'Reilly nailed a 3-pointer at 14:15 to start the run before Rebane scored back-to-back baskets. Kara Elfoson hit the backend of two free throws at 11:55 before Swain completed the run with a jumper at 10:46 for an 18-4 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's cut the margin to 21-14 thanks to 3-point baskets by Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Guerriero, but the Bearcats ended the half with a 6-2 run to go into the locker room with a 27-16 lead.

The Mount came out of the second half to hit back-to-back 3-pointers by Henderson and Andresson to trim the margin to 27-22. Sparked by five points from Elofson, Binghamton responded with a 9-0 run to restore a double-digit lead at 36-22 with 15:02 on the clock.

The Mountaineers would trim the margin to eight points after a Guerriero layup with 10:16 left and freshman Mariah Powell (Glen Mills, Md./Baynard Rustin) made it a seven-point margin after hitting her first two collegiate free throws with 52 seconds left, but Mount St. Mary's could not get no closer.

Henderson returned for the first time since injuring her knee in last season's season opener against Virginia on Nov. 14, 2010. Powell played her first collegiate game, entering the game in the final 70 seconds and registered two points and one rebound.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action at UMES on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
