Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (October 21, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's topped Central Connecticut State, 1-0, in women's soccer action at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday afternoon. Goalkeeper Alicia Miller made five saves in the game to record the shutout victory and become the Mount's all-time leader in career shutouts.
The shutout victory was the 11th in Miller's career, breaking the mark of 10 set by Anna Lebo (2004-07). Miller is now the Mount's all-time leader in career wins, shutouts, games played by a goalkeeper, minutes played and saves.
With the wind at their backs, the Mountaineers (5-8-2, 3-4-0 NEC) carried play throughout the first half, holding a 9-to-3 advantage in shots. After a couple of good scoring opportunities, the Mount finally broke through in the 43rd minute when Mary McCarron played a perfect through ball to Sadie Winship, who buried the shot for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Winship's goal moved her into a tie for sixth place all-time at the Mount with 13 career goals.
In the second half, Central Connecticut State (4-6-5, 1-4-3 NEC) had the wind advantage, but the Mount defense was able to hold strong to preserve the win. CCSU's Jewel Robinson hit a free kick just over the cross bar in the 52nd minute. The Mount's Kelly Baker had a good scoring chance with 27 minutes left, but sent her shot wide.
The Blue Devils then had several good scoring chances in the final 10 minutes of the game. Miller made a nice save on a Rachel Maguire free kick with just under three minutes left, tipping the ball over the cross bar on a shot from just outside the penalty box.
Mount St. Mary's finished the game with a 12-to-10 edge in shots while Central Connecticut State had an 8-to-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mount closes out its home schedule on Sunday against Quinnipiac at 12:00 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mountaineers will honor this year's senior class prior to the game.
Game Notes: This was the Mount's first win over Central Connecticut State win 2000...Mount St. Mary's is now 3-13-2 all-time against the Blue Devils...The Mount is currently in a three-way tie for sixth place in the NEC standings with nine points...The top four teams advance to the NEC Tournament with the Mount four points behind Sacred Heart for the fourth spot...Mount St. Mary's has three games left on the NEC slate.
