Women's Basketball Makes First Trip To Bryant On Saturday

opening tip...

Saturday's contest between Mount St. Mary's and Bryant marks the third meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 2008-09 season.
• The Mount leads the series 2-0 after downing the Bulldogs 56-51 on Feb. 20, 2010.
• Mount St. Mary's will be making its first trip to Smithfield, R.I., after the first two games in the series were played at Knott Arena.
• The Bulldogs are playing an NEC schedule for its second season, but will not be eligible for the league's postseason until 2012-13.

about the bulldogs... Bryant comes into the contest 6-13 overall and 3-5 in Northeast Conference play after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 62-58 on Monday.
• Senior F Siamone Bennett fueled the Bulldogs with 20 points, including a layup with 1:25 left to put Bryant up for good, and 13 rebounds against the Knights. The sophomore tallied 22 points and 17 rebounds in a 74-66 loss to Maine on Nov. 19. Bennett ranks second on the team with 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore G Meredith Soper narrowly missed a double-double against Fairleigh Dickinson, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore is third with 9.2 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore G Danielle Douglas leads the team with 10.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Douglas has been the Bulldogs' leading scorer eight times this season, including scoring eight points in a 59-48 victory against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 8.
• Sophomore G Katie Whittington ranks fourth on the team with 6.2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. The sophomore registered 26 points in a 77-70 win against Colgate on Dec. 11.

last time we met... Cassie Cooke posted 14 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Bryant 56-51 on Feb. 20, 2010. Mary Dunn added seven points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists while Lauren Howell added eight points. Siamone Bennett fueled the Bulldogs with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Danielle Douglas chipped in 10 points.

last time out... Sacred Heart defeated Mount St. Mary's 55-46 on Monday. Sophomore Selina Mann paced the Mount with 14 points and a program-record 10 steals.

quick hits on the sacred heart game... Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an 8-0 advantage and held an eight-point advantage four times in the first 10 minutes before the Pioneers used a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.
• Sophomore Selina Mann paced the Mount with 14 points and a program-record 10 steals for her second career double-double. Mann's first career double-double was also at Knott Arena against Sacred Heart when she posted 12 points and 12 rebounds on Jan. 28, 2010. The sophomore tied Karla Green (at Richmond, Feb. 20, 1983) and Kim Rhock (St. Francis (N.Y.), Feb. 13, 1990) as the only three players in program history with double-digit thefts. She also became the second player in program history to notch a double-double with steals, although Rhock recorded a triple-double against the Terriers (19 points, 14 rebounds, 10 steals). Mann has posted five 10-point games in her last nine games and is averaging 10.6 points, 4.9 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game in that stretch.
• Senior Mary Dunn added 11 points and six rebounds against the Pioneers. The senior has recorded double figures in seven of the eight conference games this season and ranks eighth with 13.5 points per game in NEC games. The senior moved into 23rd place in program history with 1,046 career points and can move into 22nd place with three points. Dunn also moved into seventh place in career rebounds with 769 boards and can jump into sixth place with two caroms.

tough start to the league schedule... The Mount has started the Northeast Conference schedule 1-7 for the first time in program history.
• The squad has battled five of the Top-6 teams in its first eight games. St. Francis (N.Y.) is the only team the Mountaineers have played that has a losing overall and conference mark.
• Five of the next seven games are scheduled against teams with losing record while Central Connecticut State and Long Island are 4-4 and tied for sixth in NEC play.

queen of thievery... Sophomore Selina Mann tied the single-game program record for steals in a game with 10 against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24.
• The sophomore became the third player in program history and the second player in Mount Division I history to record 10 steals in a game. She joins Karla Green (at Richmond, Feb. 20, 1983) and Kim Rhock (St. Francis (N.Y.), Feb. 13, 1990) as the only players in program history to reach double-digit thefts.
• Mann becomes the second player to record a double-double with points and steals, although Rhock finished her game against the Terriers with a triple-double (19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals).

it all starts with defense... The opponent has scored 60 points in 14 of the 19 games in 2010-11 and is averaging 67.3 points per game.
• Last season, the Mount allowed 60 points or more 11 times. The Mountaineers also ranked second in scoring defense (58.7 ppg.) in the Northeast Conference and 37th in Division I.
• The Mount has allowed 60 points in a game 56 times under head coach Bryan Whitten.

next on tap... Mount St. Mary's concludes its two games in New England at Central Connecticut State on Monday.
• After the Mount returns from Connecticut, the Mountaineers will have five of its next six games at Knott Arena, starting with Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 5 for Homecoming.

on the road... Mount St. Mary's is 3-8 on the road this season and is averaging 58.6 points per game away from Knott Arena. The squad has won three of its last five games on the road.
• Senior Mary Dunn is the only player averaging double figures on the road with 10.2 points along with 6.0 rebounds per game. The senior has five double-figure performances on the road, all in her last seven games. Dunn posted 18 points against Loyola on Dec. 11, 12 points against Sacred Heart on Dec. 20, a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31, 17 points at Quinnipiac on Jan. 4 and 13 points at Long Island on Jan. 17.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has five double-figure performances on the road, including a career-best 26 points at San Jose State on Dec. 29.
• Freshman Ashley Christie also has five 10-point games this season, including a career-high 19 points at St. Francis (N.Y.).
• Freshman Kayla Grossett has three double-digit games, sophomore Tara Lonergan has two 10-point performances while junior Sandra Andresson and freshmen Kelly Guerriero and Jessie Kaufman each have one double-digit game in 2010-11.

in the last five... The Mount is 1-4 in its last five games and is averaging 61.4points per game.
• Senior Mary Dunn is averaging 11.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in the last five games. The senior has registered four double-figure performances in that stretch, including 18 points and 12 rebounds against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10, 13 points against Long Island on Jan. 17, 12 points against Quinnipiac on Jan. 22 and 11 points against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 10.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in her last five games. Christie had 10 points against the Red Flash, a career-high 19 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15 and 15 points against the Bobcats.

stat stuffer... Sophomore Selina Mann has done it all on the court this season whether its scoring, rebounding, assisting or thievery.
• Mann has scored double figures in seven games this season, including seven of the last 14 games. The sophomore notched a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29 and scored the game-winning basket against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• The sophomore has grabbed at least five rebounds four times this season and the 5-4 guard has a 10-board game on her career resume.
• Mann has dished out four assists 13 times this season, including a career-high eight helpers against the Dons and seven dimes at Navy on Dec. 8 and at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15. She ranks second in the league with 4.46 assists per game.
• The sophomore has recorded two steals in 15 of the 19 games and four steals five times, including a program-record 10 thefts against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24. Mann currently leads the conference with 2.89 steals per game.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 242 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (257) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (263).
• The Mount is 242-137 in Northeast Conference play, including 135-58 at Knott Arena and 107-79 on the road.

wins vs. losses... Mount St. Mary's is averaging 73.8 points per game in its four wins compared to 50.7 points per game in the 15 loses. The squad is 4-4 when it reaches 60 points.
• The Mountaineers are shooting 44.1 percent when it wins, but just 32.6 percent in a loss.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in every game except Quinnipiac (Jan. 4) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15), but are only -3.7 on boards in wins and -11.1 in losses.
• Mount St. Mary's is 3-0 when it leads at halftime and 1-15 when the opponents hold the edge.

board issues... Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 16 of its 19 games and only held a one-board edge against Quinnipiac on Jan. 4 and against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15. The opponents have held a 10-rebound edge in 10 games this season, but the Mount has been trailed by 10 rebounds or less in eight games, including seven of the last 11 games.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 71 games under head coach Bryan Whitten, including 34 games with double-digit rebound deficits. The squad is 3-31 when the opponent holds a 10-board advantage.
• Last season, the Mount won the rebound battle in 50 percent of its games and had seven games when the opponent had a 10-carom margin.

that was a career day... Freshman Jessie Kaufman recorded a career-high 14 points against Long Island on Jan. 17.
• Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 19 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15. Fellow freshman Kayla Grossett also had a career day against the Terriers with 16 points.
• Freshman Kelly Guerriero had a career-best 11 points against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Senior Mary Dunn notched a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31.
• Sophomore Selina Mann scored a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29. Fellow sophomore Tara Lonergan also established a career-best against the Spartans with 13 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.

a new year, a new start... In January, the Mount is 219-89 and 134-81 since switching to Division I.
• The Mountaineers are 69-32 at home and 65-39 on the road since switching to Division I.
• Once the New Year hits, the Mount has posted a 469-220 overall mark and a 268-149 since turning Division I in the last three months of the season.
• The Mount is 11-23 under head coach Bryan Whitten in the month.
• Mount St. Mary's is 6-12 at home and 5-11 on the road in the month under Whitten.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 18 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• The Mount has used three different starting lineups this season.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 107-straight games in her career.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has started 69 of her 84 games played.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 65 of the 76 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has started the first 19 games of her collegiate career.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman started the first nine games of the season before fellow freshman Kayla Grossett started games against Sacred Heart and San Jose State before sophomore Tara Lonergan made her first career start against San Francisco and has started the last eight games.

three-pointer to start scoring is deadly for the mount... Mount St. Mary's registered a 3-pointer for its first field goal of the game nine times this season. The Mount is 1-8 in those games and picked its first win after starting the game with a 3-pointer against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 15.
• The squad has hit a trey to start its scoring against Virginia (Nov. 14), Cincinnati (Nov. 23), Towson (Dec. 1), Pittsburgh (Dec. 4), Navy (Dec. 8), Loyola (Dec. 11), Quinnipiac (Jan. 4), Saint Francis (Pa.) (Jan. 10) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (Jan. 15).
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman has hit the squad's opening 3-pointer in four times, senior Mary Dunn has three opening treys while junior Sandra Andresson and freshman Ashley Christie each have one.
• The Mountaineers are 3-6 when its first field goal comes from inside the arc.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 21-15 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 14-52 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 27-23 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 8-48 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 28-13 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-2 when the game is tied, but just 6-56 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 16-15 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 18-52 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 27-23 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn and sophomore Selina Mann are the only two players on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in their career.
• Dunn posted a career-high 26 points against San Francisco on Dec. 31 and had 21 points against Robert Morris on Jan. 8. The senior also accomplished the feat twice last season when she recorded 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• Mann became the first player this season to turn the trick when she posted a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29, 2010.
• The Mount has registered 19 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 11-8 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest

notes on dunn's 1,000 point game... Senior Mary Dunn became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 points with her layup at 17:05 in the second half against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Jan. 10.
• Dunn is the first player to reach the milestone since current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier joined the club against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 7, 2009.
• Dunn is the 15th player to reach 1,000 points at home. The Mount is 11-3 in those games.
• The senior is the third 1,000-point scorer head coach Bryan Whitten has coached at the Mount, joining Gauthier and Tiffany Green (2007-08).
• Dunn is the eighth player in program history to have 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 23rd place in program history with 1,046 career points. Next on the list is Samira Rashid (1,049, 2002-06).
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn moved into seventh place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 769 caroms after grabbing six boards against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24. The senior can move into sixth place and ahead of Beth Foster (771, 2000-04) with three rebounds.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 15 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with two double-doubles.
• The senior is also third on the Mount's games started list with 107 career starts and can move into second place with two starts to tie former teammate and current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier (109, 2005-09).

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 541 career points to rank 49th in program history and can move into 48th place with six points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 59th place in program history with 443 points and can move into 58th place with six points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move into 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 257 points for her career to rank 73rd in team history and can move into 72nd place with 18 points.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has 173 points in her first season to rank 85th in program history. The freshman can move into 84th place with two points, 83rd place with nine points and 82nd place with 13 points.
• Sophomore Tara Lonergan and freshman Kayla Grossett both recently surpassed 100 points in their career. Lonergan has 121 points and Grossett has 112 points. Each player can move into 100th place in team history when she reaches 138 points.

1,000 games in program history... Mount St. Mary's played its 1,000th game in program history on Jan. 8 against Robert Morris.
• The Mount is 633-372 in program history.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could have arguably been the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 74-115 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 204-102 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 135-59 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 36-71 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 15-34 overall at Knott Arena and 10-22 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with a 21-37 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 11-18 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).
