EMMITSBURG, Md. - Quinnipiac defeated Mount St. Mary's 74-60 in
Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on
Saturday.
Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) paced the
Mount (5-14, 1-6 NEC) with 15 points. Mary Dunn (Whippany,
N.J./Morris Catholic) added 12 points and seven rebounds while
Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.)
chipped in 10 points in the loss.
Felicia Barron fueled the Bobcats with 25 points and seven
assists. Brittany McQuain added 12 points and Jacinda Dunbar
registered 11 points in the winning effort.
Quinnipiac jumped out to the advantage and never looked back to
earn the season sweep against Mount St. Mary's.
The Bobcats scored the first 11 points of the game to grab an
11-0 advantage. Barron started the scoring with her first of six
3-pointers on the afternoon at 18:42 before Dunbar scored in the
paint at 18:14 for a 5-0 advantage. Barron then hit a trey at 16:05
and Dunbar converted 1 of 2 at the line at 15:37 before McQuain
capped the run with a jumper at 15:10 for an 11-0 lead. Tara
Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) stopped the Bobcats
opening surge with a layup at 14:53.
With Quinnipiac holding an 11-6 edge at 13:29 left in the first
half, the Bobcats scored 25 of the next 32 points to grab a 36-13
margin with 4:39 on the clock. Barron powered the surge with eight
points. Quinnipiac went into the locker room with a 43-21
advantage.
In the second half, the Bobcats extended the lead to 60-32 with
15:18 remaining. The Mountaineers responded with a 16-2 run to cut
the deficit to 62-48 with 8:21 left.
Christie started the run with a traditional 3-point play at
14:16 before McQuain converted the second of two free throws at
13:54. Christie and Grossett then connected on consecutive
3-pointers at 12:10 and 9:34 to cut the margin to 61-41.
McQuain momentarily halted the Mount surge by hitting 1 of 2 at
the line at 9:02 before the Mount rattled off the next seven
points. Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary)
started the spurt with a layup at 8:49, Kelly Guerriero (Floral
Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) nailed a triple six seconds later and
Christie capped the run with a layup at 8:21 to make it a 14-point
game.
Quinnipiac responded with a 10-2 run sparked by five points
apiece from Barron and McQuain to give the Bobcats a 72-50
advantage with four minutes on the clock.
Mount St. Mary's closed the contest on a 10-2 spurt, but
Quinnipiac came away with the 74-60 victory.
The Mount returns to action on Monday at home against Sacred
Heart. Game time is 7 p.m.
