Blacksburg, Va. (January 2, 2011)-Virginia Tech
defeated Mount St. Mary's, 99-34, in a non-conference matchup on
Sunday afternoon at the Cassell Coliseum. Junior guard Lamar Trice
paced the Mountaineers with 16 points in the loss.
Trice was 5-for-13 from three-point range in the game. Tayvon
Jackson added six points and two rebounds off the bench while
Jacolby Wells pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in the
loss.
Erick Green led Virginia Tech with 17 points while Jeff Allen
added 14 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two
blocks. Tyrone Garland chipped in 16 points off the bench with
Manny Atkins and Malcolm Delaney each scoring 12 for the
Hokies.
Virginia Tech shot 69.2 percent from the field in the game and
held a 40-32 advantage on the boards. The Mount was just 9-for-53
(.170) from the floor while committing 25 turnovers in the
game.
Virginia Tech (9-4) took control of the game by scoring the
first seven points before Trice hit a three-pointer to make it
7-3. The Hokies continued to add to the lead, pushing the margin
to 26-6 with 8:25 left in half. Virginia Tech closed the half with
a 24-3 spurt to make it 50-11 at the break.
The Mount (3-12) was 4-for-24 (.167) from the field and 2-of-7
(.286) from the line in the opening half. Mount St. Mary's
committed 13 turnovers, leading to 20 Virginia Tech points. The
Hokies were 19-of-28 (.679) from the field in the half while
holding a 21-to-12 margin on the boards.
The Hokies continued to pull away in the second half to surge to
the victory.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday, January 6th,
when Northeast Conference foe Saint Francis (Pa.) visits Knott
Arena on campus. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
Game Notes... The Mountaineers are 0-5 all-time
against Virginia Tech, including 0-4 at Cassell Coliseum in
Blacksburg, Va...This was the final non-conference game of the
season for the Mountaineers, which finished 2-11 against
non-conference foes...Senior Jean Cajou made his season debut,
going 0-for-5 from the field with two rebounds and an assist in 13
minutes of action.
