Trice scored a career high 22 points and Danny Thompson added a
career-best 16 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past St. Francis
(N.Y.), 70-61, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday
afternoon.
Mount St. Mary's (5-14, 3-3 NEC) scored the first five points of
the second half to open up a 17-point advantage and held on from
there for the victory.
Trice hit 7-of-12 from the field and was 6-for-7 at the line to
post his career-high 22 points, the second time he has reached the
20-point mark in his career. Thompson was 6-for-8 from the field
and 4-of-5 at the line for his career-high 16 points. The junior
forward chipped in a game-high eight rebounds as well.
Sophomore Raven Barber hit all five of his field goal attempts
in the game and scored 11 points for the Mount in the win. Atupem
finished with eight points and five rebounds in the win.
Dre Calloway had 15 points while Ricky Cadell and Akeem Bennett
each added 14 in the loss for the Terriers, who lost their first
home game of the year in eight tries.
The Mountaineers saw the 17-point second-half lead cut to five,
56-51, with 5:43 remaining, but Shawn Atupem scored on a drive from
the left baseline and Trice added a bucket on the next possession
for a 60-51 advantage.
The Mountaineers came out strong in the opening half, hitting
their first five shots to grab a 12-4 advantage. St. Francis
(N.Y.) (8-9, 3-3 NEC) answered with eight consecutive points to
even the score at 12-12, but the Mount responded with an 18-to-2
spurt to take the lead.
Thompson was a key figure in the start of the run, scoring seven
consecutive points to give the Mount a 21-14 lead. Barber
continued the run with dunks on back-to-back possessions and Julian
Norfleet's three-pointer stretched the lead to 28-14. The run was
capped by a Tayvon Jackson jumper for a 16-point lead with 7:10
left in the half.
