Emmitsburg, Md. (May 8, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's
lost both ends of a twinbill to Central Connecticut State on
Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils took the first game, 8-4,
before posting 27-7 win in game two.
The Mount falls to 18-28 overall and 12-15 in the Northeast
Conference while CCSU improved to 23-17, 12-11. The Blue Devils
hit three grand slams on the day while Sean Allaire, the NEC's top
hitter, went 6-for-7 with four home runs, six runs scored and 10
RBI in the twinbill.
Andrew Caron paced the Mount, going 3-for-7 with a home run and
four RBI in the doubleheader. Kyle Kane added three hits in the
second game.
In the second game, Central Connecticut State hit three home
runs during an eight-run second inning to take command. The Blue
Devils added a nine-run fourth to push the lead to 17-0 and never
looked back.
The Mount scored all seven runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning. Kane had a pair of doubles in the frame while Tom Healy
added a double and a single as the Mount sent 12 batters to the
plate.
In the opening game, Sean Allaire went 2-for-2 with two home
runs and six RBI to pace Central Connecticut State to the
victory.
The Mount grabbed an early two-run lead with a pair of runs in
the first. With one out, Helman singled and Darr walked to put
runners on first and second for Kyle Kane, who drove home Helman
with a two-base hit. Eyler's RBI grounder scored Darr for the
two-run advantage.
The Blue Devils took control of the game with a six-run fourth.
Kyle Zarotney and Mitch Wells had RBI singles to even the score.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Allaire belted a grand slam to
right for a 6-2 CCSU lead. Allaire added a two-run wind-aided
homer in the sixth to make the score 8-2.
The Mount rallied as Helman doubled and Caron blasted his
team-best seventh home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the
score to 8-4. The Mount had the tying run at the plate in the
seventh as the bases were loaded with two outs, but Caron made the
final out, allowing CCSU to earn the win.
Helman and Foster each had two hits in the loss for the Mount.
Vincent Molesky struck out five while allowing eight runs in 5.2
innings to take the loss. Peter DeCandia tossed 1.1 innings of
scoreless relief for the Mount.
The teams complete the four-game series with a nine-inning game
at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
