EMMITSBURG, Md. - Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) and
Tom Healy (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Daulphin) each knocked in three
runs to lift Mount St. Mary's past Maryland-Eastern Shore 11-9 in
non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.
Caron went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer in the first and then
hit a run-scoring double down the right field line in the third and
came around to score his second run of the day. Healy went 1-for-3
with three RBIs. The sophomore hit an RBI double in the first and
then registered sacrifice flies in the second and the seventh.
Josh Winter (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) went 3-for-3 with two
runs scored and an RBI for the Mount (11-13) while Jake Darr
(Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) went 3-for-5 with two runs
scored and Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) posted a 2-for-2
performance with two run scored. Buddy Fields (Manassas,
Va./Stonewall Jackson) allowed an unearned run on five hits with
six strikeouts for his first win of the season.
Nick Wiggins and Donnie Haines had two RBIs apiece for the Hawks
(2-25). Tony Gonzales with 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI,
and Phil Vaughn had four hits and a run scored in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held off late
charge by Maryland-Eastern Shore for its third-straight win.
Flynn led off the Mountaineers first with a wind-aided triple to
center before Healy doubled down the right field line to bring home
Flynn. With two outs, Winter shot the right center gap to plate
Healy on a triple before Caron smacked his third home run in six
days to give Mount St. Mary's a 4-0 lead.
Alex Andrews (Vienna, Va./James Madison) started a two-run rally
in the second when he singled to center and came around to score on
an error. Flynn notched his second single of the afternoon and
scored on Healy's sacrifice fly for a 6-0 advantage.
The Mount added two runs in the third. Winter and Caron started
the rally with back-to-back doubles before Caron touched home on
Tony Quaranta's (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola Blakefield) sacrifice
fly to right to increase the margin to eight runs. Darr then
singled to center to start the fourth and scored on Patrick
Moriarty's (Dumfries, Va./Potomac Senior) sacrifice fly to right
for a 9-0 lead.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the fifth after Gonzales
touched home on an error to trim the margin to 9-1. Wiggins then
smacked a two-run homer in the sixth to make it a six-run
contest.
Mount St. Mary's answered in the bottom of the inning with a run
to grab a 10-3 margin. Darr singled to third and Shane Eyler
(Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) singled down the right field
line before Tony Prescott (Elkridge, Md./Howard) plated Darr on an
RBI fielder's choice.
The Mount added a run in the seventh after Andrews was hit by a
pitch and touched home on Healy's second sacrifice fly of the
afternoon to hand the Mountaineers an 11-3 lead.
Maryland-Eastern Shore then scored the final six runs to make it
an 11-9 contest. Gonzales scored his second run of the game on a
balk in the eighth before the Hawks plated five runs in the
ninth.
Elliott Alston started the comeback attempt in the ninth with a
solo home run before Haines hit a two-run triple to center field on
a ball that took a bad bounce over the center fielder's head off of
Mount St. Mary's closer Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac).
Gonzales plated the fourth run of the frame on an RBI groundout
before J.J. Courriveau beat out an infield single to second to
score Vaughn and make it a two-run contest. With the tying run at
the plate, Matta secured the victory with a swinging strikeout.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at Monmouth. First
pitch is 3 p.m.
